Yes, it is on the top side of the tranny, right next to where the right side axle goes into the tranny. It is VERY difficult to get at. Period. If you take off the Y-pipe it will be somewhat easier.

There is a heat shield that covers the VSS and is held on by one of the VSS's bolts, I believe. I think there's a recent thread concerning this very problem.

Heat kills the VSS. Some shops will remove the sheild while in there working but it really needs to be there to keep heat off the VSS.
I don't remember where the tread went but I did the swap too. I didn't have a code for it I don't think but I think I did it cause the tranny was shifting weired. My tranny went boom.

I think I did it in 4 hours. Worst part was hunting the correct size for the bolts that hold the vss in. I think they are 10mm.
Just imagine working on something you can't see. It all has to be done by feel. You may get angry. If you do crawl out and relaxe a few minutes and get something to drink and go back. It doesn't help to get angry, don't ask how I know.
It would have been like a sceen on American Chopper.................

If you use a 1/4" swivel head ratchet,8" long 1/4" drive extension with a 10mm 1/4" swivel socket you can get to the bolt without removing the exhaust.Kind of tricky to do but it saves time and agrivation on dealing with rusted exhaust bolts.I've got it down to 30-40 min.
