At this point in time suggestions are needed on where to live in the Phoenix area so I can narrow down my apartment search. I visited Phoenix many times over the past 15 years but never gave much attention to where I was or where we were going. In a nutshell I'm looking for the most inexpensive apartment in an area where I won't need to worry about losing my life. I appreciate advice from anyone who is familiar with the area.....

I also need advice about the job market, my dream of a headlining male dancer most likely will not come true :nut: . For the past 10 years I have only known auto repair but will consider anything if it pays decent. Not finding a job is the area I'm most concerned about. I'll have enough money to support myself for a short time but need to find something ASAP to get ahead of the game. Once again any advice is much appreciated....

Sorry to see you go, but best of luck to you! My brother just moved to FLagstaff last year, and loves it (even though it's a world away from phoenix as far as climate) I just talked to him tonight and theres already 3 ft of snow on the ground at his place and 2-4 more feet coming tonight

I visited Flagstaff in the past and will visit there in the summer months when in AZ but won't move there. It reminds me of northern WI with the snow fall totals (100" annually) and one major reason I'm moving is to NEVER see snow again.....;)

Welcome to the heat. It is raining like crazy here right now but in two days it will all be dried up and a sunny 77 degrees during the day once more.

All of the new growth areas of the Valley of the Sun are nice to live in but of course those are on the outskirts so if you don't find work near where you live, be prepared for long commute times. Try and find work first, then find a place nearby to live.

For a mechanic, dealerships would be the safe bet but probably not the highest paying. The big independent shops would probably pay more; places like Sun Devil Auto, and Fletchers. The little mom and pop shops are going out of business left and right.

Good luck.

If you are into diesel let me know. We have had a few openings lately.

One of my many regrets was never learning about diesel the way I did about gasoline engines. I can hold my own with diesel engines but not to where I'd feel comfortable working on them for a living.....

pretty much anywhere out here is okay to live except anywhere in between 35th ave and 24th st south of northern all the way to south mountain.

also try and stay out of anywhere from the downtown area going east south of glendale till at least 99th ave.

El Mirage (on the far west side) is pretty dicy depending on areas, scottsdale is pretty much guaranteed to be very nice, and the neighborhood i live in (ahwatukee) is very quiet and very nice. apartments down here run between 600-800 for a one bedroom with a covered parking space and 800-1000 for a 2 bedroom apartment. if you dont mind commuting, a nice 12-1500 sq. foot house could be rented out in Maricopa (about 35min south of chandler south east valley) or buckeye (45 minutes west of phoenix on I-10 with no traffic) for 1000 bucks giver or take a hundred.

the problem out here (or the good thing i guess since you're a mechanic) is that mass transportation sucks ass. hard. so if you dont have a car, better find somewhere close to work to live. most people here in AZ commute at least 30 minutes every day to get to work.

you can also try Gruelichs too as far as hiring for a wrencher, but the economy has hit PHX just as hard as most other places.

good luck man. lot of good members in AZSHO.

I live in El Mirage and as long as you stay away from old town you will be alright. You can find a house 1200-1400 sq ft for anywhere from 750-1000. My neighborhood is pretty quiet but I do have a golf course to my right and the river bottoms accross the street.

South scottsdale / North Tempe areas are good too, I think. In south scotts (old town around 68th/indian school/thomas) there are LOTS of empty available apartments. Good location, the south part of scottsdale has a couple of auto-drags. scottsdale road and mcdowell have lots of auto parts, shops, and independent mechanics. Scottsdale road and thomas espcially. There are checkers, pep boys, **** shops, napa, couple of old car dealer/mechanics. 68th st is the border to phoenix, so it's as close as you can be without living IN phoenix.

Actually, the border goes as far west as 60th St in places. My wife and I lived in South Scottsdale for years and loved it. Great restaurants, bars, parks, close to everything. Then we moved to Maricopa. We commuted. It sucked. Maricopa is a pit that slowly sucks the life out of you. Avoid it at all costs. Now we live in Glendale and it's OK. My teenager goes to a decent school and it's the part of town we both grew up in, so there's that.

If you're single, young and looking to wrench, South Scottsdale is the place to be. Plus, it's close to ASU and Scottsdale is full of, how do I put this gently, effin' hawt women. Like, seriously hot. Hotter than sun burn.
