I have a 93 atx with about 90,000 on it and I got a knocking noise coming from the front valve cover synthetic made it go away for a little while but know it's back i'm gonna try changing the shims because i measured them and they are all pretty warn on shonut there are a couple of different prices for them 56 shims for 65.00 and 56 shims for 130.00 if you return your old ones does anyone know if it makes a difference which ones you buy.
If anyone has faced this problem and could help would really apreciate it.

SHONUT offers rental of shim kits, you will never really know what your going to need until you get in there and start using them that why its wise to rent such a kit. Its up to you if you want to use new or used shims.

I order a lot of my shims here. The 29mm Shims are the ones that fit our cars. Not the 29.5mm shims.

Also check local yamaha motorcycle and kawasaki dealerships...i picked up a few used and new ones there pretty cheap.

My motor was on an engine stand so i could wait a little for shipping.

do you guys think the knock is caused by the shims it's coming from the top of the motor this seems like a good place to start if someone else has some other ideas of what could be going on i could really use the help. also i had the covers off a couple weeks ago to change the gaskets the time chain tensioner was in good shape.

The tensioner may seem to be fine, but could be clogged up internally. Also, the chain might be stretched, both of these conditions can lead the chain to slap around and cause a knocking noise. You might also want to look into changing your rod bearings, those cause a much more serious knock.
