I have a 93 ATX with a bad tranny. The tranny slips in all gears severely and shifts extremely rough. I would prefer to just put in a new rebuilt tranny since I plan to keep the car for a while and since the cost of a tranny is much less than the cost of another used vehicle, especially with the mods I have (Tokicos, intrax, 96 brake upgrade, Dynomax cat back, 17" Fondmetals, SP strut tower brace & a custom paint job w/ under 10K).

My question is what is the best way to go about getting a quality rebuilt tranny. I see Rock Auto has a rebuilt ATX for about $1,300 w/shipping. Is this a quality rebuilt tranny? Does is have the upgraded parts (seals, etc.)?Will I find a better price somewhere else? Will I find a better warranty on a different tranny. I plan to do the swap w/my brother who is a mechanic. I have swapped a SHO ATX before so I am pretty comfortable. Is there anything else, maintenance wise, you guys would recommend I do while I have the tranny out? I have to replace a wheel bearing too and plan to do it while I have the suspension apart.

Might also try contacting a loyal ford dealer and ask for an SVTOA discount of 10-15% and see what kind of price you get.

The Ford reman has a 3yr/36,000 mile warranty that covers parts and labor, most other remans cover just the failed part. And about the other thread, I don't think he had got a true FQR reman, i've worked in a Ford dealership for the last 17yrs and never seen one painted black, all were painted silver or not at all. There should be an FQR sticker and a tag with the serial number glued on it to verify it is an FQR.

I double checked on this and it IS a FQR reman with all documentation, stickers and serial number tag glued on. Someone said that Ford has several regional rebuilders and that it appears the one in the SE USA paints them black rather than silver.

It's hard to beat RockAuto...

I've got one of their AX4S's in my '93 SHO. It's remanufactured by ProFormance Powertrain ( http://www.goppt.com ) and comes complete with the torque converter, a flush kit for the tranny cooler, and a new inline fluid filter. They ship in a sturdy plastic container and provide all the paperwork for returning the core. I've never had any problems with anything I've received from RockAuto for my vehicles ('92 Thunderbird SC, '93 SHO ATX, '95 Dakota 5.2 Magnum V8).

And no, I don't work for RockAuto....

I would contact Doug Lewis at FPS...best tranny around. He is 'SHO Dude' here on the forum...

I checked the the FPS tranny is about $1,000 more than the rock auto tranny. Is it worth the extra money. This car is more of a daily driver for me since I bought my Mustang 2 years ago. Also I only drive 1 mile to and from work everyday so, with my other driving, I only put about 100 to 150 miles on per week. Also I don't "beat" on the accelerator very ofter.

Is the ProFormance ATX a FQR part that carries the 3 yr/36,000 miles warranty? I could not find warranty info on the Rock site for this tranny.

Do not use a Ford tranny. The warranty is void if you open it up for any reason. So that means no mods. Come up to Traverse City or PM me and we can talk. I reccomend Northwest Engine Exchange. They rebuilt mine last month and they did a top notch job. They know their SHO's. It came to $2100.00 parts and labor. It comes with a 2 year unlimited mile warranty and you can do what ever you want to it. I am very pleased with their service as well. Tom Gray is the man to talk to there. Some info here. http://www.upbiz.com/up_wide/grandtraverse/northwestengine.html

The FPS is a 'bullet proof' top of the line tranny, so probably for your use it wouldn't be necessary...

How difficult is it to replace the transmission in a SHO? I've about decided to bite the bullet and get my transmission rebuilt / replaced, and I'm trying to decide whether that's something I want to do myself, or pay someone else to do it.

I am a professional aircraft mechanic, so I'm pretty good mechanically, but I'm not very familiar with cars, transmissions especially. I have plenty of tools, but most are standard and I don't really have a suitable jack.

I'm also in AK, which kind of limits my choices. Anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with Cottman?

Cottman rebuilt an MTX hyundai trans for me for like $1100 it worked great, even after I totalled the car! But I had the trans out of the car, also. Kind of pricey, but I think it was mostly the parts that were expensive.

I was just thinking that if the Rock Auto tranny was a quality tranny it would only cost me about $1,350 and it would have a warranty. Also Rock says their tranny will ship quickly and I could do the swap sooner.
