question for you all.

stereo worked fine this past friday.

came back from ls last night. went to go to work. my 1995 alpine cdm-7824 detachable face cd player would NOT turn on.

no lights, no nothin'

i checked all the fusees under the dash. they seem fine. i tried to scratch off any oxidation with my fingernail.

nothing.

anybody ever have this happen? usually if a head unit breaks, it just does weird stuff like skipping and what not. never just go dead out of the blue.

maybe the aftermarket wiring adapter (so i can run it with the stock jbl system) got loose.

thanks,
Robby

It Is possible for a unit like a radio to just crap out and die. It happened to my old Clarion once.

Unplug the plug from the head unit itself. Check the pins with a test light or meter. Do you absolutly have power at the plug?

If it is a detachable face, Alpine's are notorious for faces going bad. Contact Alpine to see what they can do for you.

update:

stereo worked yesterday coming home from work. but it does shut itself off. if you press on the front of the faceplate right where it touches the contacts on the actual head unit, it works. let go, it shuts off.

so, i guess all i can do is buy some plastic friendly contact spray. other than that, i guess i can take out the head unit and see if i can "bend" the prongs out a little so they will make better contact with the face plate.

i'm not that ticked though. the alpine cdm-7824 deck was bought in 1995. she had a good run if it's the end of the road.

i bought the deck from a friend in 1999 for $75 plus 2 bass tubes (which i sold for $60 ;-)

i have no regrets about pulling the faceplate every night. the last thing i need is some ***** to break my window and slaughter my dashboard for a 10 year old $20 alpine deck, ya know?

so, if this thing is toast, what do you guys recommend? can you still buy a deck that will last close to 10 years? i hate cheap crap and i've heard alpine is only alpine in name only. they are no better than the rest of the crap out there now. opinions?

chris, good point of the face issue. my friend paid $120 for a replacement face for his 12 year old alpine eck/cd changer. so, not sure it's worth it, but i will call. i think my deck is one of the last "real" alpines. cost over $450 new and is made in japan.

see ya,
Robby
