so i'm driving in down-town ann arbor the other day, right? and my car stalls in the middle of an intersection turning left. i'm thinking, "wow, that's weird, never had my car stall before!".. so i try and start it, and it cranks and cranks and doesn't turn over. so my ghetto white ass gets out and pushes it out of the intersection. keep in mind this is downtown ann arbor and i'm still blocking traffic, but at least only in one direction. so i try and start it again, and it finally starts. i drive it to a parking spot nearby at a bank one, and it stalls again. i let it sit for a few minutes, and start it again, this time with the hood open. i watch it idle for maybe 30 seconds, then it stalls out again, struggling like it isn't getting gas. i have between a 1/3rd and a 1/4 tank of gas.. my first thought was fuel pump.. which it did in fact turn out to be.. cost me $250 for a new fuel pump and fuel filter, thank god for AAA towing tho.. i guess i jinxed myself, i was just thinking "wow, 99,600 miles and still no problems! almost to 100k!"

the first of my sho problems. great. :)

Well with that many miles, and no problems consider yourself lucky.

Make sure when you turn the key to ACC that you don't hear the whine of the fuel pump, or if you do if the pitch drops, you are probably right on the money in your assessment. You might as well upgrade to a higher flow one possibly a 155lph or a 190lph since you are replacing it anyways. There is a nice writeup here in the shoforum on how do to the repair yourself, and it really isn't too involved. Just click here to see it.

Jeremy is right...but the sound you should hear when you turn the key to ON is a roughly 2-second hum from the fuel pump. If it whines, it's on its way out. And yes, replacing it is fairly straightforward, though a bit of a PITA if you have a lot of gas in the tank (don't ask how I know :p ).

projectSHO89:
SHO owner's motto should be: "Don't scrimp - Buy that AAA membership and a cell phone."
Got the phone, and finally AAA! That phone saved me once, when my SHO wouldn't start. I came back to it later, after getting a ride home, and was going to get it towed, but then it started!

Looks like I am really pushing my luck when it comes to my fuel pump. I am the original owner of my 95 SHO with 106K and clicking...I had replaced the fuel filter four times. As for the fuel pump, it is still the original pump in it. Perhaps it is time to start reading about replacing the fuel pump in the near future.

sunny San Juan Bautista,
I have 150,000 miles on my '89 SHO. The fuel filter was replaced for the very first time at 148,000 miles. Yeah, I think I should start thinking about replaced my fuel pump too! wink
