I'll try and keep it short. Basically I bought a 91 SHO in LA a few weeks back. Ran great, sounded great, looked great. Was 30-45 minutes into the trip when out of nowhere, the car started losing power. Crap.
We pop the hood and the radiator cap had blown off. Valve covers instantly boiled our spit. It wasn't a pretty sight.
Fast forward to today, and I've ordered all the 60k components, rod bearings, head gasket, as well as taken the heads from my buddy's SHO engine as I assume mine are about as flat as the himalayas. Probably just gonna pull the engine from the car considering how much I'm going to be doing to it.
My biggest concern is having this happen again - so far as I can tell, the cooling system pressurizes fine. Water pump seems to work, and I believe the t-stat may have been taken out by a previous owner, as we found one in the engine bay just chillin. My worry is it may be a sensor/electrical issue of some kind, as the car's temperature gauge was on C almost the entire drive, and very quickly crept up to halfway between C&H. The accuracy of the sensor concerns me because at "operating temperature" that thing was hot enough to cook a turkey on.
For reference, the car still drives (not that I've been driving it, god forbid), and throws no codes.
Has anyone here had a similar experience? I'm ust looking to be pointed in the right direction re: repairs so this doesn't sneak up on me again.
