I recently removed my MTX coolant overflow bottle and replaced it with a ATX bottle to get for room for future projects. I now have an empty gap on my radiator that I would like to fill. I have a set of ATX cooling fans that I would like to put in. I have searched for information on the topic and there seems to not be too info on the subject( Or maybe I just can't search). I read that the MTX is a one speed fan and the ATX is a two speed fan. The MTX has a 2 prong connector and the ATX has a 4 prong connector. I assume one is the ground, one is for low speed and the other for high speed, so what is the forth wire for? Would the swap be as simple abandoning either the low or high speed trigger wire and wiring both fans into the MTX trigger wire. So both fans would come on at the same time and be the same speed. I figure it can't be that simple, because the amperage of another fan would be too much. And at this point in time I am not trying to burn down the SHO...

the atx fan has a 4-pin connector, 3 of the pins are populated: ground, + for low speed, + for high speed.

the mtx fan has a 2 pin connector, + and ground.

just to mix things up, there is also a 2-speed single fan that was used on the 3.8 engine Taurus during that vintage - it has a 3-pin connector.

on the atx fan, both motors/fans run at the same time and same speed.

on the atx cars, I have almost never seen the high speed on the fan, so if I were doing that swap, I would wire it for low speed.

How simple do you think it would be? Just a simple as wiring the both the ATX fan's low+ to the existing MTX's +? Would that put to much load on the MTX's circuit?

I thought the fans worked like this however I am no expert at all!

Both fans run at low speed whenever the A/C is on. When the car gets hot like when in traffic again both fans kick on however the high speed gets full voltage from the CCRM and it spins to its max. rpm.

Has anyone done this swap? Is it as simple as wiring the both the ATX fan's low speed+ to the existing MTX's +? Would that put to much load on the MTX's circuit? Do I need any extra fuses or relays? If this is going to get to complicated would the 3.8 Taurus fan be easier to install? Rubydist said it is a 2 speed so all I would have to do is wire either the high speed + or low speed + to the existing MTX's +, correct?

Yea, and I found this:
http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=46259

I am just not sure how to wire cube relays in to trigger the fans. I also read that the ATX fans have a resistor attached to the fan shroud( I assume it is the white thing), so I don't know how that would play a roll. If I used the 3.8 Taurus fan would I need any relays?

Appreciate any help I can get......

they all draw the same amperage.
yes the MTX fan is a 2 speed fan.. 93 and up... you can even find the info in the ccrm pinout.

what ypu can do is change the ccrm to 93 from a 92 or 91

basicly the way it works is the PCM grounds the wire out for the fan relay in the CCRM and either the ground is light or heavy in order to get the high or low speed relay.
it runs a solid state converter for the fan.

you will not gain anything from the ATX fan set up.
if i recall the taurus fan SHO or not, pulls 4500 cfm.
i promise you will never need more fan. only way you can get more cfm is a big truck belt driven fan.

reason you never hear the difference in the mtx fan is because its efficent enough it dont need to switch high low etc.
