MTX Shift Shaft Seal Replacement?

95 MTX,

if looking at the trans from underneath the car, on the very bottom of the trans there is the end of a shaft, on mine its leaking a little bit.

I looked it up in the service manual and its called a shift shaft. Was just wondering on whats involved in replacing the seal.

Do I HAVE to take the trans apart?

You do have to take the trans case apart to change it. Once you do that seal is easy to replace. It's just a rubber o ring that slips over the shaft.

If you're talking about the shifter shaft seal with the metal that is used to attach the rubber boot.... Remove the boot and linkage, use some pliers and pull on the seal (metal). Make sure the shaft is smooth before sliding on the new lubbed rubber..... seal and carefully tap it in.


It's been a few years since I replaced mine myself and I think Gary replaced mine when he rebuilt my transmission 2 years ago.


EDIT: I couldn't see the picture at work. I was thinking about a different seal.

It's very easy to change, you don't have to take the trans apart.

0. Put the trans in 4th gear, as this puts the shift shaft fully into the trans.

1. Remove the bolt and nut that secures the shift linkage clamp to the shift shaft. Remove the rubber boot from the ****** on the shaft seal.

2. Now is the time to de-burr the bolt hole through the shift shaft. If you don't, the burr will cut the new seal as it's being installed.

3. Find a deep socket that will fit snugly over the shift shaft but will still make contact with the ****** on the shift shaft seal, this is your seal installer tool.

4. Pull out the old seal with pliers.

5. Make sure the shaft is clean, it will drip ATF some, no need to drain the trans unless you're just stupid slow about this.

6. Use the dripping ATF to **** up the new seal, slide it over the shaft and fit it into the bore in the trans case.

7. Drive the seal home with a mallet and the tool you discovered in step 3.

8. Reinstall boot, reconnect shift linkage.

I'll just add to Gary's procedure that it's helpful to stretch a single layer of electrical tape over the end of the shaft and the bolt hole to ensure the new seal is not cut when you slide it on. Easier than deburring. Take care not to bend the boot ****** on the seal as you tap it in.
