The blocking ring isn't slowing down the gear to a low enough speed to engage without grinding. There's a few causes: old/low fluid, clutch assembly wear/adjustment, or a worn 1st gear blocking ring. The out of the ordinary would be something clogging up the **** holes on the output shaft, keeping fluid from reaching between the output shaft and the actual 1st gear to allow for free spinning. If the gear cannot free spin, it cannot stop as easily and will wear out your blocking ring, synchronizer, and gear teeth for the specified gear... all of which are obsolete parts, hard to find, and expensive when you find someone willing to sell.
To help your problem, clutch pedal depressed through out, select 3rd gear and hold it in for about 3 seconds, then select 1st gear quickly. The engagement of 3rd, with the clutch pedal depressed as stated, will stop the moving parts inside the transmission and allow for an easier engagement in 1st gear. I do this with a perfect transmission everytime I select 1st gear, no matter if I'm moving or at a dead stop. Third gear is easier to rev match under normal driving or racing, with a worn blocking ring compared to all other gears, this coming from past experience as I was able to do this with a blocking ring in three pieces with very minimal grind, if any.
I recommend a fluid change with Valvoline Dex/Merc ATF. It made a significant improvement in the shifting of my MTX, virtually eliminating the notorious reverse gear grinding.
