Change interval? According to the maintenance schedule: never. In practical use maybe every 60,000 or 100,000 miles. It's really up to you, but the introduction of any contaminants into the case would be more damaging than not changing the fluid. The Type F fluid in my box had been in there for at least 60,000 miles and when I opened the casing to refurbish the seals and blocking rings at 271,000 miles, I found the fluid a beautiful reddish pink color with no suspended particulates.

The manual transaxle is not subject to the heat generation of the automatic transaxle and the fluid does not break down like that of the more tortured slushbox. There have been more than a few discussions on this board regarding the type of fluid (per Ford: Type F ATF and/or MERCON III, dependent upon production year) and the method of removing the old fluid.
