The car is bone stock. I am almost at the end of my 1st full tank of 93. I have had the car about a month. I am projecting about 275-280 miles on 17.5 gallons. I hope these cars have low fuels indicators, they have everything else:biggrin:

So that's about 16 mpg. Pretty lousy. Suggestions???

How hard are you driving it?
I did a bit more than 300 miles this summer on 13 gallons, I think it's about 27MPG But I wasn't under 75 all the way and in the trip maybe a 10 minute over 100mph.

Back in Michigan ... again.
Are you absolutely sure you have an 18 gallon tank? Many later SHOs got the standard 15 gallon instead; my 93 has a 15 gallon tank but my 91 has an 18 gallon. Come to think of it, every gen II I've owned save for SinisterSHO's black 93 has had a 15 gallon tank. That's a 95 ATX, 95 MTX and my current 93 ATX.

If you do have the big tank, I'm going to assume by your post that you don't drive it too much, since you're just now finishing your first tank after nearly a month of having the car. If you typically drive very short distances the car will never have a chance to get up to normal operating temperature; as such it will run much richer because it's still cold, which is exactly what it's supposed to do. The downside of course is reduced fuel mileage. I'm seeing a slight reduction in fuel mileage on my 93 because of this. My wife used to drive it 18 miles one-way to work, but for the last couple months it's only been about 6 miles. She was getting 23-24 miles per gallon, but now it's down to about 20 because most of the miles being put on the car are now done so while the engine is cold. She also doesn't hit the secondaries too often, if she did I would expect to see mileage in the 16-18 range. 18 MPG is the EPA city rating for an automatic, so 16--while not great--really isn't too far off from the expected city mileage.

Hunter.......Good call on the gas tank size! I was looking at the owner's manual. The first time I filled her up it took $30 close to E. It would been $45 with the 18. I drive 6.5 miles each way to work, so it doesn't really get all that hot.

Thanks for pointing these important items. I was ready to take it in.

I have the 16 gallon tank. I have been getting 19-20 with the colder weather, short distances and lack of highway driving.

My car is an atx and it seems to get about 13 mpg with 30% highway 70% street driving. Its pretty horrible.. My plug wells have a good amount of oil in them so Im doing an upper 60k soon. How much of an increase could I expect with gas mileage? I guess cold weather cuts a couple of mpg's off too.

Cold weather and atx dont get along. The trans fluid needs to get up to temp before the converter will lock-up, therefore killing the mileage when its cold. Dads 95 went from 22+ summer to 16+/- winter MPG.

Correction. I have a 15 gallon tank, not 16. Since I had the 60K done in January, I have been getting 21-22 mpg. 80% city 20% highway. I had new Motorcraft wires put in as well. It's alot more fun to drive to.

I have been bi*%#ing about mileage all winter. I recently put in a new thermostat, hoses and flushed it out. I was running too cool, and the EEC was always running the car as though in warm-up mode. I'm still not up to summer cruising mileage, but I have raised it from 16-18 to 23 on my last tank. Thanks to all who pointed out that too cool CAN be just that- TOO COOL.

Hank - Have you tried replacing the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor)? It tells the computer when your car is warm enough. Yours might be shot...
