It's just the FL-400S. Some guys choose to use the larger FL-1A.

if im not mistaken ive used both on my 3.2 and i dont notice a difference.
i dont think it matters as long as you change the oil and filter when youre supposed to.

The larger one, obviously, just can hold and filter a higher volume of oil. The FL-400S has some kind of silicone valve on it. It's really your choice. Each has their own preference. I've heard the fit is tight with the 3.2s if you use the FL-1A.

I've used the FL-1A for about a year and a half now. I like it a little more. My oil stayed cleaner a wee bit longer..

I have found the oil stays cleaner longer with the FL-1A also.
It also bumps up capacity about 1/2 qt,more oil is better.

the fit on a 3.2 w/ fl-1a is a tiny bit tighter but it doesnt bother me. holy crap things are so much easier when u have access to a lift and real shop tools like snap-on and mac, none of thatr craftsman sears junk. makes all the difference

The extra capacity of the FL1A does not make up for the shi**y black rubber drainback valve it uses compared to the high quality silicone valve on the FL400S. I'll stick with what Ford specifies.

LOL... if you need "real" tools to do an oil change, something is wrong.

Motorcraft filters are marginal at best. Though I understand many have a devout allegiance to 'motorcraft', they are merely relabeled, CHEAPEST BID filters.
Your much better off with a higher quality filter like a WIX (#51516 I believe), K&N or Mobil-1; and a few others.
I'm wondering what the scientific metrics were, from those claiming that they "could tell" that one filter worked better than the other??
I work for one of the OEMs; OEMS spend 10's of thousands on actual "oil analysis". So I'm thinking "eyeball" analysis might not be where it's at.

In what way is the Motorcraft FL-400S marginal? Can you document your claim with data? It is certainly not a cheapest bid filter in the sense of some big box store house brand filter. The FL-400S is built with metal end caps, a silicone diaphram anti-drainback valve, and a heavier than average backplate. The Wix is no better built. The Mobil 1 and K&N filters are quality filters from Champion Labs, no argument there, but I have never seen any "scientific metrics" that support their 2-3X higher price.

The 400-S looks more like the Purolator Blue ones, still not identical inside though.

How about being an OEM employee, that used to work in this area of the business? I believe that qualifies me just a little bit...:finger:

No offense intended but trying to understand your assertion. It's well established that the Motorcraft FL400S is made by Purolator, and is a Premium Plus filter upgraded to the PureOne anti-drainback valve. Every piece of data i have seen indicates the Purolator is good quality and every bit as good or better than Dana Wix. Purolator and Wix are both old guard companies and very well respected. So what's not to like?

Once can certainly spend a lot more for a Mobil 1 or K&N, both by Champion Labs, and get a synthetic blended media. But again, there is no data that supports what level of benefit these offer in a street car over a good Purolator or Wix or Hastings or Donaldson filter with a paper element.

i do intend to cut open one of the new shorter FL400S and compare to the old to see what has changed.

That's not data. It sounds like, "Trust me, I'm on the internet," which is seriously weaksauce.

Experience is good, but from what you just stated you could have been the guy that emptied the trash.
