I just read how to detect a bad motor mount on the shotimes page but I am still confused. I am almost positive that I need new motor mounts but when I put the car into first and let off the clutch the whole front of the engine rose up evenly, not justt the right side. But I have noticed that there is a shiny spot on top of the manifold. When I put it in reverse the same thing happned. It rose up evenly but not as bad as the front. So do I just need a front one? Any suggestions as to what type. I was going to order OEM ones from SHOnut

You described the effect of a worn out front motor mount. Since the engine moved more than 1/2"(?) in reverse, the rear mount is likely to need replacement also. The third mount is the transaxle mount way over on the driver side subframe in the wheel well (visible with the splash shield removed). That long pivot arm makes it look like the engine is rising evenly. That mount rarely need replacing and is still fine on my old car.

Fwiw, the shiny spot on the intake is not caused by a bad motor moount 100% of the time.I have a dull spot(the intake shines too much,so the theory is reversed :D )because there is a slight sag of the liner. It`s coming off in the spring.

Go out and take your car for a ride at 7k RPM's and if you see or hear your hood pop up when your on the gas let off and if you hear the motor slam back down and the hood pop back in place your motor mount is very bad. hehe thumbs_u

You can also get new clips at an auto parts store and put it back like it is supposed to be.

I don't think that the liner is the problem. I was in an accident in September and the hood and liner were replaced. I also can feel it when I start the car and the shifting hasn't been all that great either. Is SHOnut cheapest for motor mounts. A guy said that he would only charge me $80.00 to put the front one in. I thought that was a decent price.

i'm gonna piggy-back on this topic as well :p

i've been noticing lately that my shifts have been pretty hard in my '94 mtx... it seems like there's a "clunking" if i don't shift in a perfectly smooth manner... i did the motor mount test in accordance with shotimes.com, and found that during both the forward and reverse tests, the manifold rises evenly (on respective sides)... there is evidence of rubbing on the manifold on the "left" side of the engine (aft looking forward, i.e. the side closest to the rad) but it's right in the middle, not at the passenger side (nearest the front of the engine)...

i *just* bought aluminum SFB from Josh at SHONUT, but they aren't installed yet... could worn SFB's be my problem? what about a tired clutch? (mine will require replacement, likely this spring)...

i know things like this are tough to diagnose over the internet, but any thoughts would be appreciated...

thanx :)
