okay so I am someone who really isnt afraid to dig into something some things I get kinda nervous about, but I do them anyways and find out thats its actually really easy. A buddy of mine has a tranny from a 94 SHO that he says is junk and if I want it I can have it. Now I was researching on rock auto and I can get a master rebuild kit for it for like $130 and I dont know about you ATX peeps out their but $130 bucks is way better to spend than a couple grand. I am going to get this from him and take it apart just to see how difficult is but I would like to know if anyyone else has done this before and if there is a write up on it on here or not I tried searching but their isnt anything. Input would be nice from anybody. If I do this and it works how many times could I keep rebuilding the tranny. The tranny that I am getting just let go he says what actually goes bad in the transmission on an auto that makes it not work anymore???

The transmission's just get tried, with the gearpack always slipping into grear! Most of the atx people just that them to shops that know the atx, there are afew on here, I hear it's a pain, that's why people take them to people! Or don't have a place to even try!.... I do wish you the best of luck!

The rockauto 'master rebuild kit' is for all the 'soft' parts - seals and friction washers. That is not going to be all you need unless you are very lucky. By the time the trans is 'tired' all the roller bearings and one-way clutches need to be replaced, and nearly always at least some of the planetary packs have gears with pits in them from wear. So, plan on spending another ~$600 on a 'master rebuild kit' for all the 'hard' internal parts. And, it would be foolish to do all that work without putting in a rebuilt torque converter, which will run at least another $100.

Then, unless you have experience rebuilding auto trans, you will most likely be in over your head. If you look in the service manual, you will see that there are several clutch packs that need to drop into the trans in the right order, and that you must shim these to the proper clearance as you reassemble it. In order to ensure that you get these all into place correctly, the trans shop will have several 'fork' type of tools that hold these clutch packs together as they get lowered into the trans case. Without those tools, you will have a hard time. Is it possible to do? - yes, but it will be a challenge, probably at least a 4.5/5 on the difficulty scale.

On the other hand, if you r/r the trans yourself, you will save some $500-700, and then take it to the trans shop, they should be able to do a 'full' rebuild for less than $1500, and guarantee that it will work.

I replaced my ATX myself. Bought a remaned Ford unit $1.2k with a 3 year 36k mileage. I installed it so only paid for it, no labor.

But, if it goes out Ford covers the labor and the parts to R&R it.

Works great!

I should have done that 6 transmissions ago. I didn't know they had a 3/36K warranty on them... maybe my next one will be a stock replacement for the turbo car if I decide not to part it out.
