Luigi I don't believe that the VSS affects idle at all. It shouldn't affect drivability on an MTX. I've been wrong before though and I didn't know where to find what I needed for my brake upgrade and you did so you're probably right. I'm just a big idiot. I'm gonna go stare at the wall and cry now. :p

Mike I'm not 100% on it's input functioning myself. Just because I know where to find brake upgrade info doesn't mean I know jack :D . The Vss I believe keeps the idle up when you push in the clutch on the move.

Jeremy I figured you would have aquired a better manual by now. Good luck.

New member with 93 ATX - 93K miles. Have had similar symptons and spent lots of $ in solutions that didnt cure problem (IAC replace, o2 sensor replace, wires and plugs replace + new valve cover gaskets, etc.) Problem has developed over last couple of years. Started with a mild surging that occured after warm up on the highway on cruise and then in city driving speeds immediately after getting off the highway. This year the surging got a little worse and started occcurring at a steady throttle (over say 35MPH)in city driving (w/out having had a highway run). Problem is worse on hot/humid days. Had the oil leak fixed recently with new plugs/wires and this seems to help (I think - but at this point I am so annoyed by all of this and the complete lack of any help/knowledge by the dealer that I am not sure I can be obkective.
Is this a VSS problem?????????

Keith, welcome aboard. It very well sounds like VSS could be a culprit. I don't have an ATX so I specifically say how it's done. All I know is it's on top of the tranny and a real pain to get to.

Jeremy doesn't Scott have a pic somewhere?

I have seen mention in this forum that you can get at the VSS if you take the intake off. Does anyone agree with this?

Luigisho,
I know asbestos is hazardous, I realy meant any type of heat retarder. I don't know what is used these days.

Jeremy, go to Partsamerica.com and look under sensors/speed sensor and it shows a picture of the part your looking for. After reading about this damn part, I hope mine doesn't go out, EVER.

Its such a shame....the part is so inexpensive
($24.50) at NAPA. Its just so damn hard to get at.

Okay, I guess with this sensor like the others for the sho, it isn't necessary to get the motorcraft part, but we can get by from one from our local partsamerica or autozone?

One more thing to add to the VSS issue. I again tried to get that thing out today. I did find it easier to access when I took the front passenger tire off. Its there, and you can see it and touch it. I finaly got a wrench to it and replaced it.

The car definitly shifts way better, but as I feared I still have tranny slipage. I have dropped my 94 ATX off at a tranny shop today.

The next time I try to change that blasted sensor, I will drop the exhaust. I'm sure it is much easier than jamming my hand and a wrench in a small opening.

Okay..just to be sure...it is the PASSENGER side wheel we are removing? Because it would seem to me to be on the drivers side if the speedo cable runs into the instrument cluster on the drivers side.

Definitly passenger side. Get the tire off and look were the axle goes into the tranny. Its just above that.

It is located on the top of the tranny. The first thing you will see is the round housing, the size of a new gold dollar. Then you will notice the fork like clamp attached to the VSS. You will see its two prongs. When you stick your hand in there you can feel the fork(prongs), and its hold down bolt(12mm).

The VSS is in a horizontal position. With the bolt to the left of the VSS. The bolt is also laying horizontaly, not verticaly(up and down).

You may have to gently push the heat shield out of the way.

Good luck, I spent some time on it.
