Maximum tire size on a 17"x9" rim?

Will 245/40/17 tires rub? I know they'll fit on the rim, so the subject is misleading.

I have 245/45-17 tires on 17 x 8.0" rims with a 40mm offset and no rubbing, but they are real close to the rear strut towers. And no I didn't have to trim any sheet metal either.

i wasn't aware that a 9" wide rim would fit. BUT i had 17x7.5 mille miglias with 245s and they rubbed the strut tower so i put spacers on and they rubbed the fender. i cut the fender and they rubbed slightly still, so it all comes down to the back spacing. to fit a 245 it has to be PERFECT

Yeah, i ran 9" rims all last summer with spacers. With three people in back, the 235's rubber the fender well... So that would make sense that a 245 would rub.

If the 235 or 245 tires are too close to the rear strut towers and you still have room on the fender lip side, you can make a set of wheel spacers out of a set of old rear disc brake rotors. Just cut the top of the hat of the rotor (the part off the rotor with the lug holes) with a cutting tool and you have a spacer that's about 2mm thick, just the ticket to keep those wide tires off the rear struts.
