I have a 93 ATX w/ABS that is leaking brake fluid out of the bottom of the master cylinder. It causes a lot of smoke from the electrical connection on the bottom of the master cylinder. I plan to replace the master cylinder but my question is can I use the master cylinder from my 94 MTX parts car, also w/ABS. The master cylinders look different and the 94 MTX does not apprear to have the same electical connection on the bottom. I have temporarily disconnected the connection from the bottom of the master cylinder on the 93 ATX so that it does not smoke and blow fuse #1 leaving me w/o any tail lights. I am not sure what the connection is for but my brakes seem to work fine w/o this connection. I ASSUME it is some sort of fluid level indicator connection, but I am not sure. If I can use the 94 MTX's master cylinder I would like to know. Thanks!

Souds like the switch you are writing about is the brake pressure switch. If it is leaking your cruise control probably does not work either. Switch costs about 18-20 bucks to replace yourself.

You are correct that my CC does not work. So what you are saying is that the electrical connection on the bottom of the master cylinder will leak and that it will also cut out the CC?

Thats right! Pick up a new brake pressure switch and your brake lights and cruise should be restored. Be sure to clean out the connector and make sure noe of the wires got fried from the leaking brake fluid.

My brake lights work fine. Does that matter in this diagnosis? I did disconnect the wire to this pressure switch and it is not blowing fuse #1 anymore so were you just stating that when I do the swap on the switch that I won't have to worry about fuse 1 blowing anymore? Just a little confused.

Also I am confused why doing the swap of a switch will stop the leaking from occurring. Does the switch come with a new gasket or something and that is what will stop the leaking? And when I do this swap I assume I have to empty the master cylinder. If that is the case do I risk getting air into the ABS system?

I had this same problem, I yanked a similiar looking switch from a Windstar at the junkyard one day, and whaddyaknow, it fit!

There is no gasket, the switch just threads in, it is pipe thread (tapered) if I remember right. When you unscrew it, brake fluid will dribble out the hole, but not a big flow or anything. No reason to empty the MC.

This should take care of all of your fuse blowing, fluid leaking, and no cruise problems! :thumb:
