Just this past wednesday on my way to school i take a right turn and i keep on going straight, my wheels are turned and i go straight i had no idea what was happening i end up hitting the curb with my left front wheel which at 5-10 MPR will **** an aluminum slicer, this put me into a bad situation, after school i drove it home and took a look at it my wheel was cracked and the bottom part of the whole wheel was facing inward torwards my car (some major toe in) . my dad and i took it into the shop on thursday because he pre ordered the wheel and 2 new front Kumho tires because the ones i had were like drag slicks, (If I had new tires maybee i would have made that turn :( they called us on friday and said that i bent the frame. well its going to a frame shop and im wondering if its worth it to spend probably a grand to straiten the frame+wheel+tires to get the sho on the road. I Mean I love the car to death Im 16 with a sho i worked on my grandpas farm to get one. Ive loved these cars ever sence i was about 13 and heard one fly bye, and my dad says they were no joke, and it smoked our V8 T-Bird (man just the sound of the thing) Anyways the crap ATX tranny slips when its warm, plug seals bad, calipers freeze all the time, and i just dont have the $ to feed into the sho, the tranny would probably be a grand plus the grand for the frame they might even say its not worth fixing it and just total it. Im wondering if that isnt such a bad idea and just start over with a new 5-speed sho and not drive the **** out of it (I need to learn how to respect cars!) like the one i have now. I need opinions!! Total it or fix a 130K 93 with a slipping tranny. How do you go about totaling a car? Tell me what you think!!!

Totaling a car means that its been in some kind of accident and your insurence has found that the repairs are going to out weigh the value of the car. I get rid of it and get a mtx. Good luck...you might want to consider parting it out, you'd probably get more money for it then just trying to sell it.

If you can get an insurance company to total it then I would do that. The auto tranny will cost more than 1k to fully rebuild from the estimates I've seen here. If you can get your mechanic to get the repairs over the value of the car and report it to see if ins. will cover.

My opinion is the maintenance cost for these cars is too high for a teenager on a budget. If you can only afford a well used model it can require substancial upkeep. Just my $.02

You need to have the car estimated for damage before repairs are done....depending on what your deductible is ::: ??$$$$
You have a non-collision damage claim.
Pursue this with your insurance claims office(not your agent).
Then let us know more.
They may total that SHO. :( :( :( :(

You know, what you may want to do is find a decent bodied MTX with a blown motor or something like that for real cheap (look around, you'll probably find one... they are around) and then take the motor out of your ATX car and you will have one heck of a MTX! The 3.2 in an MTX is addictive... Trust me... Look at the sig.

I agree with FOR SHO. Ditch this one and getting a manual. Parting it out wouldn't be a bad idea either if you have the space to store it. By my calculations thats $1000 for the frame, $1000+- for the trans, and I'd bet money you're due for a 60k ($1000+- parts and labor). Add in all the other miscellaneous things you mentioned (and some of those little things that just pop up) and you're looking at $3500 real quick just on maintenance. eek! Thats too much for me, and I make decent money. You should check ebay. This time of year they got great deals on SHOs. autotrader.com is another good site.

this is just kinda out there, but i feel your pain in the broken rim man, this old lady in a damn POS cougar cut me off she thought she was going to make it across the road or something, the old bia slammed on her brakes in the middle of the road and me like 10 ft away from her turned right and hit brakes but i slid and hit the curb, totally killed my rim. i was lucky that was the only major problem but i feel u man. damn rim costed me a sh*tload to get replaced (sorry for some of the language but it is an event that still really gets me po'ed to this day)

My opinion is to part that baby out, whether or not they total it. Unless you have the money to properly maintain it, it's gonna be a POS. If you like the Taurus, have you given any thought to just getting an SLO (I know, bite my tongue) for right now until you can afford the upkeep of an SHO? Good luck whichever way you decide to go.
