lowering front end????

I have been searching ways to lower my 89, I know you can lower the front by moving the knuckle further up the strut, do you have to cut the tab off the strut? That seems kind of dangerous. Any replies would be appreciated.

The strut is held in by the clamping force of the knuckle, the tab is only for alignment purposes.

Yes, if you want to drop the strut further into the knuckle, the tab needs to be trimmed.

If you decide to drop the strut in the knuckle be very careful of clearance issues between the bottom of the strut and the CV boot and between the spring perch and the tire.

has anyone actually run this setup, i am afraid the strut will fall down to far when i am driving. also how much drop can i expect to get with this mod?

The way to do it properly is with lowering springs.
If you have a stock suspension, this is not any type of performance mod. By lowering, you change the geometry of the steering and suspension components such that angles are increased, resulting in increased bump steer and torque steer. You will need to shim the steering rack to help reduce this angle, but as far as I know, nothing you can do to offset the increase in torque steer from the drive axles being at an increased angle.

Many people have done the mod, but like SHOBOTE said, doing it this way is for looks only. You also run the risk of possibly having the CV boot hit the bottom of the strut if you go too far, like SHOAZ mentioned. A 1/2" is about all you can safely lower the strut before you start running into problems witht the CV andhitting the tire with the spring perch.

Think about how thin that tab is. The entire weight of the car is not being held by that little tab, resting on the pinch bolt. The pinch bolt is called that, because it pinches the knuckle tight around the strut. The pinched knuckle is what supports the car, not the tab and bolt.

Jason, where do you get the parts to relocate the hood struts to the fender?

FWIW, the front of the Pumpkin is lowered more than most via the coilovers (it'd be impractical on the street), the struts have been shortened 3/4" (which would be more or less equivalent to dropping the strut in the knuckle), and I've not really noticed any adverse or increased torque steer effects. The rack is shimmed, but other than that I've not done anything special to compensate.

Hi, sorry, by shimming the steering rack you mean lifting it away from the subframe by a few sixteenths, right? is there a minimum or maximum amount of shimming? I'm sorta looking for a slightly lower LOOK, and a half inch sounds good to me..
