lower timing belt pulley loose

Can someone use small words and explain to me why my lower timing belt sprocket at the crank has about 10* of slop in it? I've got the crank pulley bolt off and there's no signs of crank cancer. But that lower sprocket feels loose, however not free spinning. Quick help here, yall....

Crank cancer is the only explanation. Either the lower sprocket is worn, or the key is worn (or most likely both). You'll have to pull it to see what damage is done....

The crank pulley's tight, and there's no gap at all around the woodruff key.

So assuming that sprocket's *****, do I just replace it and move on?

Could you explain more then. The key holds sprocket to keep it from moving. If it is moving without the crank moving, then there has to wear somewhere. Either the sprocket, the woodruff key or the keyway on the crank. You will need to pull it ans inspect the componants.

After I pulled the crank pulley bolt, there's no sign of damage on the crank pulley. I haven't yet yanked the crank pulley to fully inspect the timing sprocket, though I suspect it has somehow succumbed to forces of nature...

Just because you pulled the bolt and don't see any damage doesn't mean there isn't damage further in. You say there are no signs of crank cancer..... I'd say a timing pulley that moves back and forth on the crank is a sure sign of crank cancer......

So I was in my garage getting something unrelated and stumbled across an epic facepalm.....it would appear that when I changed my front main seal, I neglected to put in that thin washer that goes behind the timing sprocket. Feel free to point and laugh.

I always like the ones who forgot the washer on the other side of that timing sprocket. Seen a few timing belts saw their way through the covers.

A lil update.....the keyway looks fine. It would appear the screws holding the CKP vane in place fell out allowing it to just flop around willy-nilly. Tis certainly a new one to me....

How did you know the timing belt sprocket had slop in it if you all you had done was pull the crank bolt and not the crank pulley and lower timing cover?

As I pulled up on one end of the belt, it'd grab the pulley and make it rock back and forth
