Loud whining noise after changing timing belt

I have seen this because the belt was too tight. Try the tension portion of the procedure to see if it goes away.

Fixed that, now have another problem

Yeah we put too much tension on the timing belt. Released it and the whine went away, but now we can hear what sounds like bearings grinding and are realizing that we should have replaced the tensioner too. Where is the best place to find one? I know I saw this posted before but can't find it now. Help?

The timing belt tensioner should be spring loaded and self tensioning.

Only the 3.2's are self adjusting. The MTX cars you need to set yourself.

You can find them at shource.com, rcmautomotive.com, advance auto has them or post a WTB here on the forum.

Which brand did you use? Had the exact same problem with Dayco. Couldn't adjust the noise out no matter what I did. The only timing belt I recommend is Cloyes. Never had an issue with their belt.

I've never heard any issue with noise with dayco belts and I sell them all day long, and that's what I've used in cars.. you head the noise if you over tighten them.

I had this same issue until I changed to Cloyes. And no, they were not overtightened. If anything, I would go in and manually loosen the tensioner thinking it was too tight and the whining would decrease but then the belt was too loose and would flop around between the cam sprockets. And it was not with just one Dayco belt, but two. It all went away with the Cloyes belt and I won't use anything but them ever again. More than likely it's not the tension on the belt that's giving him issues, it's the belt itself.

You might think there's no difference between the brands but there is. All you have to do is search my name and see the threads I started because of the same whining noise. And I guarantee you the Dayco belts are a direct cause of so many people having not only noise issues, but experiencing broken tensioner studs as well. Which FYI, I had to deal with too. For a while there, lots of people here were having to deal with broken studs and it wasn't because they didn't follow the proper procedure, but because of the belts they installed. Do not use Dayco or any of the Italian made belts. Only the USA made Cloyes.

Your right. I obviously have no experience with timing belt jobs on the SHO, or any experience with this brand even though this is the brand my company carries.. Silly me.

Fix whatever you want. But, I've never experbience any of what your saying with the dayco belts. If it whined I over tightened it. I back it off and measured the slack with a straight edge and put it within spec and whining went away and I never have had an issue since, or had any complaints towards the jobs.

I'm telling you my experience. If you take personal issue with it, that's your problem because my post wasn't intended as such. I do not recommend or will use Dayco or the Italian made belts on these cars. It's just real strange that many have whining timing belt issues when the install procedure is simply to release tension on the spring. Is it the spring, the tensioner, or the belt? Because I replaced all of them and the sprockets trying to fix it and the only thing that finally cured the noise was a Cloyes belt.

The 3.0 are spring loaded and according to the ShoNut 60K video, the spring sets the correct tension on the belt. I also have used this method personally quite a few times. They are not self adjusting....meaning that they do not adjust over time if the belt were to stretch with age.

If the 3.0 self tensioner is not working then either the spring is missing or (which is more likely) the pulley rotated backwards when the timing belt was taken off causing the spring to uncoil.

I have put new timing belts in at least 6 cars (too old to remember all the details....) and have used both Dayco and Gates belts. The only time I had a noise issue was when I had a belt too tight. Not saying some belts aren't bad, because that is certainly possible, but I have not had a noise issue do to the belt.

This is correct.. I meant that, ut said something different. When I refered to self tensioning I mean that you don't need to crank it and tighten down a set nut like you do on the 3.0's.

I'm not taking it personally, but when you just blame the belt, and the belt alone then completely disreguard my statement as rubbish then yes, ill get irritated.

As was just stated, you may have gotten the one bad belt, or installed it backwards (possible too), but not evey dayco belt will make noise.. I have never seen one in 12+ 60ks I've done.

Like I said, the belt was too tight.

It is a Dayco, from Advance. Now the problem is I have to replace the tensioner. Didn't do it before because funds are very tight, but we can hear that bearing grinding noise and figure the tensioner is bad too. May be what broke the timing belt to begin with. Best price I found was from PartsGeek. $39 plus shipping for a GMB.

So now the question is...

when I replace the timing belt tensioner, do I have to re-align the timing belt also? I would really love to avoid taking everything apart for like the fifth time in two weeks if possible. I am positive that the belt is positioned correctly right now but will taking the tensioner off change the position?
