Hey guys, newbee here. My 97 M3 just got wrecked thanks to some idiot. Been looking at some alternatives and saw a SHO at a local dealer. Have always admired the car.

Can you guys give me some high level do's and don'ts?

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to look around so I thought I'd go to the experts. Any advise on engine? Model? Options? Year?

Thanks in advance!

the SHOs will all have the 3.5 EcoBoost and all wheel drive. there are also a few of the SELs out there that are awd EcoBoost, and don't forget about the MKS which is also available with the EcoBoost, and more goodies than on the SHO.

Do you guys mind telling me a little more about the EcoBoost from an insiders viewpoint? Doing a quick search I see it is twin turbo charged? A relatively new engine? How do the turbos hold up?

I'm going to look at a BMW 335i in the morning. It also is a six (straight six) with twin turbos and is known to have turbo failures. If I buy the car I expect to have to replace them at some point if I keep it.

Maybe it's a bit early in the life of the EcoBoost engine to expect an answer to that question but I want to know what you guys have experienced. The car will get driven hard but with respect. How many miles do you guys have on your cars?

The 3.5 Ecoboost has been around since late '09 as a 2010 model. There have been a couple of reports of leaky seals. I think the percentage is extremely low. A couple of guys have blown them up but in those cases, I believe they were asking for too much power out of the stock internals or may have had other inherent problems. Although some have safely gone well over 400 WHP, 400 seems to be a pretty safe spot. Mine is plenty fast at 353 WHP. There are ugraded turbos available.

I only have 12K but others are up over 100K. I've probably run about 40 1/4's but drive fairly normal/spirited on a daily basis.

The 3.5 itself has been around for quite some time, known as the Duratec. Very reliable engine. The heads are modified for turbocharging, and GDI is used for fuel delivery.

Note that upgraded turbos allow you to make more power, and also the same power levels as OEM at LOWER levels of boost. The hp/tq numbers DJE is referring to are easily achieved with STOCK turbos and a good tune. With a couple of supporting hardware updates (hotpipes, cooler tstat, 3bar MAP, etc.) his car is a 12.5 in the 1/4!

I'm an old school guy. That is impressive. "his car is a 12.5 in the 1/4"

This is incorrect. You could get a 2.0L 4-cyl turbo EcoBoost in the non-SHO Taurus (SE, SEL & Limited), but only with FWD and have an EcoBosot badge on the trunk. The only Taurus models to get the 3.5L V6 TT EcoBoost is the SHO.
