ok from what i have read lots of people have cut one coil off the front springs in order to get a nice stance and drop. i was planning on putting them on right now uncit and see how it sits and then taking them back off and cutting later if i was not happy. however it seems almost everyone has cut theirs. my car will be an auto X car and now i am thinking about cutting before ever installing them and hoping for the best. from what i understand cutting off just one coil should not have any ill effects as far as handling goes correct? i have seen it refered to as a "dead" coil. i really want to do this right the first time and have a great competitive car so i am very thankful for any advice on what i should do :thankyou:

if its auto x why not go lower then the eibach's, intrax goes lower with no cutting. Anyway, if you install remember they will settle a little after some driving, maybe a few thousand miles. I did cut a coil out of mine, the mtx front end weighs less and doesn't sit as low as atx so cutting a coil out helps the stance. I cut 1 coil out of my fronts only FWIW. Also yes they are dead coils, but i personally wouldn't cut more then 1 although eibachs have 1.5-2 dead coils. Also it should not effect handling or the spring as long as when you cut it you DON'T GET THE SPRING TO HOT. A cutoff wheel works well, getting them to hot effects the metal and the springs will sag in no time.:thumb:

do you have pics of your car sitting with one coil cut off? so i will be using a 4.5inch cut off wheel and cut off one coil. i really really doubt they will get hot enough in the time it will take to cut the coil though. it takes alot of change the properties of the super hard steel they use in automotive springs. thanks for your advice !!

Not really. Lowering the car increases the center of gravity's leverage on the roll center, causing more body roll. Also, you lose strut travel and riding around on the bump stops is not good for handling.

Yeah, my car was really low, but I was willing to sacrifice some handling for the looks.

I need you to explain this, because its the opposite of what I was always taught - that lowering the cg will reduce body roll in turns.

Plus, having more "rake" helps out with nose diving. More weight on the front, rear comes up, and more chance for the rear to come around.

:stupid:

I always thought my lifted 150 had more body roll after I lifted it 4 inches.

Here is a pic of my car on eibachs with 1 coil removed.

I also used a 4.5 inch angle grinder with light pressure it will hardly build up and heat at all.

I didn't cut anything off my eibachs, and I think it looks pretty good. I'll snap some pics tomorrow and show you.

this is what my car looks like in all sorts of auto-x driving conditions in terms of pitch and dive with un-cut eibachs and tokikos.

I believe the tires on the slicers are a 225/60/16? and the tires on the black wheels are 225/50/16? any lower, and i'd have trouble on some of the speed bumps i have to go over (with the slicers).
the car handles perfectly as-is. as you can see in the photos, running azenis on a warm, dry day with plenty of grip, the car still stays relatively flat. are you driving a gen1 or 2? my 89 has a tendency to oversteer with the tire pressures i run (39f, 36.5r), but only very minimally and only when pushing the car EXTREMELY hard. otherwise its very well balanced.

*edit*
in THIS PHOTO, my right rear wheel is off the ground, and there is less body roll visible than some of the subies on coilovers that were there. I'm not sure what size the sway bars are, but they're the stock ones so far as I know.

Uncut..

Eibach on the left, Intrax on the right
Dsc14350
Stock vs Intrax
Dsc02742

I later cut two coils off the front on the Eibachs and one coil off the front on the Intrax. :nut:

The one on the right had better be an ATX. Thats how my MTX sits with a coil cut off.

well yeah mine is a 91 with i believe the biggest stock sway bars (24/26) and i am just really leaning towards cutting one coil. i will only do it if i think it WONT harm my cars handling compared to uncut. and even with all the info on here i am still not sure what that outcome would be.
