I was looking into Koni's.

I was wondering if anyone had them, and if you can use ANY sho strut housing for install.

It says that the inserts are made for the Macpherson OEM struts. So does this mean the warranty is void if you dont use OEM strut housing's??

I was wondering if anyone has installed Koni's into old Tokico or KYB stut housings. Or if its possible.

Some strut housings may be designed a bit differently, causing the insert not to fit correctly. They were made to fit the OEM ones. They may fit others as long as they are built the exact same as the OEM ones.

FWIW, even the OEM strut tubes had differences among them. When I built my coilovers we discovered that I had a "fat" set of strut tubes. These were the OEM strut tubes off my silver car, and even still sport the OEM stickers as proof. The "fat" tubes have the same diameter as any other where they fit in the knuckles/spindles, but then expand a bit to larger diameter above that joint.

It wasn't too big of a deal to get the Konis to seat in these nicely. The front struts came with an expansion ring that then fit pretty snugly in the larger tubes. For the rears I cut a piece off the rubber gasket that came with the Konis and put it around the insert so that the rubber sleeve was between the insert and the strut tube. That keeps it pretty snug in there and suppresses any rattling that it would otherwise use to drive you batty.

The bigger problem was that we needed to get different threaded sleeves for the coilover perch, so making the Konis fit wasn't that big of a deal.

Even the OEM tubes have different dimensions, so I'd imagine fitting them into non-OEM tubes wouldn't be much worse.

Thanks for the info.

Ive been wanting to make coilovers, so Ive been looking into it.

I just couldnt see myself taking the time to rip out old struts for a donor, or even buying new OEM struts. I have KYB's, and theyre shot. So Im gonna see if it will work.

Hmmm...the KYBs are the one I'd be most worried about, since the tube tapers at the top. As long as the straight portion is long enough you should be fine.

I'd think any old strut would work, personally. A trip to the junkyard would probably get you four struts for not much money. Condition doesn't really matter much as long as the basic tube and perch are okay, which is pretty likely. Even a bent shaft would be non-issue, I'd think.

I know what your saying about the KYB's. I noticed that. They almost look smaller because of it.

I might just have the guys at the junkyard pull some stock ones for me.
