Are the knuckles that are in the 94-94 SHO's (the ones needed for the 96 brake upgrade) the same ones that came in regular taurus'/sables? Anyone know? Ted? Sdpatt?

If you're putting them on a car that has ABS, you need to get the knuckles from an ABS car. It is not a SHO/SLO issue as it is an ABS dependence.

So if you find a 94+ Taurus that has ABS, whether or not it is a SHO the knuckles should work.

I posted this on another forum...

--BEGIN PASTE--

OK...

Called two different dealers today, and they both had the same answer for me. Wanted to run it by the list, as I figure more of us are SHO experts than most dealer parts people.

Concerning the spindles/hubs:

They are not SHO specific. Spindles/Hubs (and brackets) from any:

93 or 94 Lincoln Continental
94 or 95 Taurus (including SHO)
94 or 95 Sable

are identical.

Therefore, if I want to upgrade to, say, the 13" Baer kit (which I do), I need to get 94/95 spindles on my car. According to the parts guys at the dealerships, I can get the spindles from any of these cars.

Now, regarding ABS - they said they had no seperate listing for the ABS pieces, but the boneyards around here did.

Just to be safe, I'll pull mine from a Taurus that has ABS (there's one at the boneyard right now, and total cost (L&R spindles/hubs + brackets) = $90).

I just wanted to ask everyone who might know:

Is this info accurate? Are these cars available donors? Does ABS matter?

--END PASTE--

So. Someone here says ABS matters. Dealer parts guys say they don't have any specific listing for an ABS or non-ABS part, which leads me to believe it's the same on ABS or non-ABS cars.

Jay97SHO sounds like he got the same information as I did.

Expert opinions?

Ford considers the ABS ring to be a separate part from the spindle, so that's why they say the spindles are the same. The salvage yards realize the ABS ring is pressed onto the spindle so they consider the two spindles as distinctive items.

If you have a '90-93 SHO, get the ones with the ABS ring so your system will still be functional.

Vehicles with ABS have a bracket moulded into the spindle for the ABS sensor. Vehicles without ABS do not. Ford replacement spindles all have the casting for the ABS sensor, whether the vehicle has ABS or not. I had to replace a spindle once in my 88 SLO, and the new one had the ABS mounting bracket. Thats the way it came.

So they Ford originally had two different OEM parts, but now those have been superceded by one OES part. That makes sense.

Which means that boneyards have two different parts unless the car has had spindles replaced (doubtful). Maybe all continentals have ABS (probable) where as Tauri are maybe maybe not.

Can you get the whole brake setup off of one particular Ford vehicle?

Can you use not only the knuckle off of a 94 conti, but also the caliper, rotor, caliper bracket or whatever?

The 94 Cont is the old style Cont. You need spindles from a 94 Cont or 94-95 Taurus/Sable. Then get the calipers, brackets and rotors from a 96 or newer SHO or a 95 or new Cont.

Pardon my igornace on this issue but what's the consensious here on the most bang for the buck regarding the brake upgrade(s)?

It seems to me to get most of the nessisary spindle componts from the bone yard, then what? Also get the '96 or newer rotors & calipers from the bone yard also or get some kind of upgrade kit like Bear or Cobra?

If you have a 94-95 car, by far the best bang for the buck is the '96 upgrade.

For the earlier cars it is expensive no matter how you do it.

The Cobra brakes option is a good one, but it is pricey unless you get a deal on the parts.
