i ve got this odd knocking/tapping noise in neutral idle that started right after i installed a new clutch a few weeks ago...it has been decreasing in notice-ability since it first started, but sometimes after the car has had time to cool down at nite (i don't get off work till 11pm) it comes back for a short while...
once above an idle it isnt audible anymore..not sure if it has to do with engine/tranny temp, just a new clutch wearing in, or something else...

any thoughts?

thanks

if the noise goes away its the throwout bearing or the actual clutch disc. and its nothing to worry about if all parts are new. iv gone through 2 spec clutches and the same noise both times after. the tob chatters when there is no pressure against it. and the inside of the clutch disc isnt coated with anything its metal and the input shaft is metal so the disc will chatter when no pressure is against it one way or another and the third thing is nuetral rollover its the gears basically making noise beacuse they are still spining even though its in nuetral they are still moving. all this goes away when you put your foot down on the clutch pedal?? if so its just nature of the beast some do it and some dont. and if you dont belive me call specs tech line they have an engineer that will explain it all to you. and Bizzy will back all this info up also.

Read the posts from my topic here on replacing the clutch. I experienced an odd noise after the clutch job that went away after a few hundred miles. It was surmised to be the pressure plate spring "fingers" smoothing themselves out against the throwout bearing.

well it also does it under negative load (when you let off the accelerator and cruise) but it does go away with clutch pedal down

I don't believe it, I did my clutch on Friday, and it was a used set from another SHO with about 7000 miles on it, and during the weekend I didn't hear any noise, but today, I had the exact same noise as described here and it does go away completely when the clutch pedal is pressed in. I had the exact same noise in the other SHO, and three months later, a connecting rod went through the oil pan after the tranny shop told me it was just a stubborn TOB. I can't let that happen again. I don't mean to be a post thief, but I am in the same boat, and this noise is making me nervous, as it is quite loud!
