Got a knocking sound comming from somewhere near the top of the engine bay in the rear.
I'm not a very good mechanic, but I attempted to figure out the problem anyway by taking off the valve cover on the rear.
Everything seemed fine from my novice eyes.
Valve gap seemed in spec. everything seemed to be working fine. Cranked it a couple times and everything looked like it was fine, so I changed the oil and put her back together. Well, I got everything back together and got it running again, now not only is it knocking in the rear but from the front as well. I would like to say its a valve spring making the noise, but have no clue. It sounds like on both the front and back that it is comming from the middle cylinders (2&5). shrug

Well, today I got a nice long lecture from the parents about me being worthless and I'm taking up space in the garage and winter is comming and they want to have their garage space back.
I was originally planning on replacing the heads by myself ( or with help from a buddy ), but now that they want the car out of the garage, I'm kinda being forced into getting this done ASAP.

Sorry, I just had to rant about that.

My question is, does anybody have any idea on how much it would be to replace the heads on a 95 3.0 ? Ballpark guestimate?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

You might have crank cancer. Is the bolt in your crankshaft pulley loose?

I haven't checked that yet.
I'll be sure to do that ASAP. I dont need to be taking my baby to a shop to have the heads replaced to find out that I have crank cancer.
Thanks for the reply man. thumb

Was the chain that drives your cams slack, or taught? A dead tensioner can cause a metallic slapping sound, but is nothing more than an annoyance.

It is very unlikely that your valve springs are causing a knock on two cylinders. Large valve gaps can cause what we usually refer to as a "tapping" noise, but not quite as heavy as a "knock." You wrote that the "Valve gap seemed in spec." How did you verify this? The only way is to measure the gap with a feeler gauge.

Another cause of a knocking noise in the upper end could be a piston wrist pin. The odds of two wrist pins knocking is again, very remote. You need to make a more definitive deterination of the source of the noise. Try using a mechanic's stethescope or a long dowel rod against you ear. Before you can fix the problem, you must first determine what the problem is.
