I just got my starter replaced this afternoon. Unfortunately had to have someone replace it for me since it was raining, and I don't have a garage to work in. Anyway, I had just replaced the starter that went bad today in May 2001. Haven't drive more then 20k miles since then. They said that the new starter went bad because of a major oil leak. The starter was covered in oil. Now I don't have an oil leak I know that because I never have to add oil in between oil changes. It is always full. Isn't the starter like directly in the way when an oil change is done? Like when you remove the filter or undo the drain plug? Is there some way to protect the starter from getting covered with oil when I get the oil changed? Or am I just S.O.L?!?!

The starter is kindof in the way. Not so much of getting the oil filter out, but of the oil that will drip out when you remove it. Mine has it's share of oil on it as well, but I clean it well after every oil change. I also cover it with a rag while doing the change to avoid getting oil on the contacts. I don't know that it will make the starter go bad, but it can make the electrical connections not have good contact.

Yup, the filter is directly above the starter, on an angle, so it is inevitble that you will get some oil on/in the starter. When i change my oil, i wrap the start as best i can with a plastic grocery bag, the clean any oil that did get on it afterwards. It seems to me a little oil shouldnt do much harm, but if alot gets in there it can gum up and hinder proper movement of the solenoid and/or internal workings of the motor.
