I just got an ATX timing belt tensioner I bought off another forum member and when I opened the box the newspaper it was wrapped had oil soaking in where the piston sticks out of the housing. And around that area there's what looks like oil and graphite dripping off the housing. I can't push the piston in by hand but is this thing going to last me any time or should I try and get my money back? :thankyou:

P.S. I don't think anything of the seller, at least not yet, as far as I know it could have only started leaking in transport but it still worries me.

It's not gonna hold. PM Whiteguy3 he'll make a custom manual tensioner for you that will never fail.

That tensioners done man. Whoever sold you that was supposed to SLOWLY compress the tensioner piston so that it will not leak through the seal. They either sent you one that was already leaking (on it's way out) or they compressed it incorrectly.

I can make you a manual tensioner as stated before.

Leaking oil means it is probably on its way out

Figured as much, user's gone for a week so I'm gonna have to wait, hopefully the return goes smoothly.

I'm still on the fence about those, I don't doubt that they work but I always lean towards the original equipment. I might get one when it's not my daily driver.

We also sell rebuilt tensioners: SHO Source

Chances are I'm gonna get one of these, just gotta convince the SO it's worth it.

Never seen the oil that's inside a hydraulic tensioner so I thought that was it, the seller says they put it through the parts washer before sending it out and it wasn't dry yet. So I'm taking their word for it, the way it came just had me worried with the fluid gathering where the piston was.

I also know Kirk at NESHO rebuilds them. Having seen them in person, I know it will last the rest of the vehicles life. Not knocking anyone else, just letting you know of option b ;).
