Back in Michigan ... again.
So let's see, in the last month I've had to deal with Michelle breaking out in hives again and generally giving up on a job; I picked up additional writing work to try and cover her lazy ass not working (yeah not too happy about that these days) so I now spend 15 hours a day staring at computers. Still fighting the ball-licking insurnace company on her medical bills, I pay those bastards $200 a month for ****** coverage and they keep telling me her visits aren't fully covered because they were emergency room visits... except they WEREN'T er visits but clinic and office visits and they don't seem to comprehend that. They'll comprehend the bat that caves their skull in... yeah I shouldn't say things like that on an open forum but f-it, I really REALLY don't care. I'm sick of companies taking money for services then not providing the services. So anyway, I then flew to Rapid City for a job interview that was a bit disappointing but still interesting, but I didn't get the job anyway so WTF, then got hit with vet bills because my boy Frankie was having bathroom problems, turns out he's got a chronic bladder problem and he'll be taking medicine and expensive food for the rest of his life. I have to hand feed it to him; it's the only way he'll eat it and I also have to make sure he drinks enough water or he could develop serious kidney troubles. Sold the Subie wagon a couple days ago; it was running well but I was ready to get something a bit smaller/more efficient to help with bills. And then yesterday on the way home, with the SHO now being our only vehicle, it decides it's better off without 4th gear.

:cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::snap:

Ok, enough of my whining, need to address the SHO. I've read up on the C clip for the servo, I'll be investigating that later this afternoon between cat feeding and blogging. I'm concerned because the trans didn't just "suddenly" lose OD and I could use some opinions on the matter.

Driving home from work yesterday on the highway, had some fluctuations in RPM. Now this is southeast Michigan during rush hour, so speeds vary from 50-75 mph, lots of lifting off/back on the gas so the trans is typically getting some exercise. Noticed at least one instance where, after accelerating from around 60ish I had a bit of a slip with the revs coming up to near 3500 on the tach. I lifted, they dropped, accelerated a bit easier, back to 4th and TC lockup as normal. About a mile later I exited the highway, stayed low speeds for the next mile, shut the car off to pick up some dinner and a few minutes I was back on my way. Accelerating down the on ramp, noticed nothing odd until I got to about 50, which is usually when I get 4th on a light acceleration. Never got 4th this time... I lifted, revs dropped a bit, back on the gas and it felt like a slip but I didn't notice quite the same spike in revs like before. Cycled the OD switch, light goes on/off but nothing. Continue up to about 70, definitely no OD though the trans did seem to react with a slip when I cycled the OD swtich. I cycle the switch to OD off, slow down to about 50 and manually pull it into 2nd, the car responds accordingly. At this point I'm a bit panicked about just getting home so I go back to D (which gave me a surprisingly firm thmp into 3rd) and leave the OD switched to off. I still have a 20 mile drive and I hit stop/go traffic for about 5 of it, at which times I choose to manually shift the car as needed through first and second, again without issue. It's almost dark when I get home, I'm tired and ****** so I just let the car sit for the night.

I take the car to work this morning (duh, only one I have left now), still no 4th but the trans otherwise operates without issue. I did no manual shifting, went through 1st, 2nd and 3rd as normal, no slipping. After a few cycles of the od button with absolutely no effect I kept it off, and once the trans warmed up (about halfway through my 22 mile commute) I did notice the converter lockup a-ok in 3rd. I kept speeds to about 60, with about 3200 rpms before lockup, 2900-3000 after.

Checked the fluid when I got to work; the trans had a new pump shaft almost 2 years and 20,000 miles ago, obviously new fluid/filter was done at that time and the fluid is still pink with no burnt smell. It was a little on the lower side but still in the full cross section (last time I checked it was at the upper end of the section, now it's closer to the lower end).

Have not pulled codes yet, will do that later today.

Now, I thought I detected a strange odor yesterday around the time I had the slip/RPM spike. It's hard to describe as it's not anything like brakes or clutch. Perhaps more like an anti-freeze/warm wires smell? Of course, with the amount of traffic on the roads around here it's not uncommon at all to get foreign smells in the car. I could just be paranoid on that one. Also, for the last few weeks it seemed as though I was getting OD earlier than normal (35-40ish on very light throttle) and it would seem to either shimmy/shake just a bit. Now I do have some looseness in the front end and I attributed it to that, but now I don't know.

Sorry for the long post. Just very, very, VERY frustrated with just about everything these days. Any advice on the trans would be welcomed at this point :)

Moved to maintenance, should've posted there in the first place sorry!

I did pull codes on my break this morning, got 648. Would this mean my problem is NOT the C clip but in fact an internal problem?

Please say no....

Sorry to hear of all the issues you are struggling with. Given the economy, etc. I'm afraid that a lot more of us will be struggling in the next year...

The only part of this that I can help you with is that my experience is that cruising in 3rd w/ the torque converter locked and clicking the o/d off button will cause the torque converter to unlock, so the only thing in your description that sounds wrong is that it won't shift into o/d. I could look in my service manual at the troubleshooting, but I'm out of town until Monday night.

Once again im a no one when it comes to transmissions. Heck i didnt even read about your trans problems, sorry to hear about all of the negativity going on in your life. Alls i can say is when you least expect it, is when something great usually falls into your lap in my experience.

As you may recall, I have had a few problems with the ATX SHO. 5 rebuilds to be exact.

My first failure was similar to yours. I would see a spike in the RPM when in 4th. It turns out that it was the OD band was stretched and the OD drum was notched and elongated.

Try this. Unplug the ECU KAM for sufficient amount of time to ensure the ECU goes into re-learn mode. You may find that you have OD again for a while.

If this is the case, I am afraid to say it is more than a simple electrical problem.

It sounds like what I'm going threw right now. You might have broke a hard part? I don't know I'm still new at this though.

Unfortunately, I'd say your OD drum or sprag is toast. the 640 series usually indicates a tranny failure. I'm sorry, man. If you feel like tackling it yourself, I'd be more than happy to send my copy of the ATSG manual to you...

I appreciate that, but it's ok. I have neither the time, nor the facilities, nor the interest nor the funds to undertake it.

Definitely something internal, as driving home today I noticed a little more slippage in the 1-2, and and off the gas at 50+ I can feel something thumping lightly when I cycle the OD switch.

Good luck with all that is going on right now Chris.

I'll be the first to chip in a "Buy Chris's 94 a new ATX" fund.

It's actually a 93 :thumb:

Chris, it does sound like an internal problem at this point, like others have said, probably drum/band related. I have a rebuilt trans and the facilities to swap one over for you if you are interested at all. PM me if interested....

Sorry but sounds like your trans is on the way out. Try adding some additives, it helped extend the life of the trans on my old mark viii before I could get it fixed. Good luck!

Holy smokes, I wasn't expecting that :sun:

But I couldn't possibly take it. I know there are people on this board in tougher spots than I; I'd rather see them get a helping hand :) I've been against the wall before, I'll figure something out on this, but I can't tell you how much the offer means to me right now :)

Tim, you have a PM my friend

Well, I finally decided to investigate that possible broken C-clip for the OD servo. Pulled the cover (nobody told me it was a PITA to get to!) and after rummaging my finger around the opening I did in fact find a broken C-clip laying in there.

Now, I have NO idea how or where to install the new one. After I got the three bolts out, I wiggled the cover and it finally shot out since it was under tension from the springs inside. I can't get the cover completely off as the steering rack is in the way.

Can anyone direct me a little better on replacing this c-clip? At least now I can look forward to having a fully functional trans again, but I'm still pretty lost with this c-clip thing.

I think my SHO has the same problem. I got no OD, and my mileage stinks (18mpg). I hope someone has what you are looking for hunter.

I'm going from memory here (which is bad in itself) on you're C clip problem.

I believe the order is :
1: spring
2: piston with "O" ring around the outside and a shaft through the middle
3. compress spring and piston and install a new "C" clip on the end of the shaft
4: reinstall the cover with 3 bolts.

Sound about right?:angelnot:
