ok well in the picture below is the drain plug the one circled in black and the fill plug is circled in red correct? i took off the fill plug this morning in my driveway on my 91 5 speed and almost half a quart of fluid came out... is this because i might not have let the car sit long enough after i got done driving it? i want to drain it all now because the fluid i saw was nasty and had some shavings in it. so is the black circled one the drain?
thanks

There really isn't a drain that bolt holds the shift mechanism in place. If you need a drain you must drill and tap one. That tranny seems really familiar because its mine :) there is a drain added on it you can see the piece of tape over the plug. Its just below the black circle and just the the right. Most people have had good luck with sucking it out the fill plug, Red circle. There is instructions on www.shotimes.com to put a drain plug in.

And the bolt circled on the right holds the shafts/forks inside. You only need to remove this when you want to disasambly the tranny.

The bolt circled in black is as Phoenix states. Many people do use it to drain the trans however if you take that bolt out, don't touch the shifter until you replace it. You also need to put teflon tape on it before reinstall it.

You dont have to tempt fate. Ishodu said that there is already a drain plug tapped in this trans. You may want to use that.

Actually said there was a drain plug in that tranny but that was a pic I took of mine a few years ago. Even if you do take it out and get lucky that nothing moves you still will only get maybe half of the fluid out. And all the nasty stuff you really want to get out will still sit on the bottom.

No tempting of fate necessary, just don't move the shifter is all. You put it in neutral, just remember to chalk the wheels, something you should do anyway.

IMO, unless you're in and out of the car during this process, there will be no accidental movement of the shifter. Just remember that as soon as it's drained to put the bolt right back in. Then lower the car and refill the trans with fluid. Keep in mind that it's best to fill it when it's as level as possible. 3.1 quarts is the total capacity, but since you're not completely emptying the trans of fluid you probably won't get that much in it.

When you get done, take a quick look at your old fluid. Hopefully you won't see any sparkles floating around in it and hopefully it won't have a horrible odor. Fresh trans fluid smells rather sweet to me. Bad fluid, when it's really bad, makes me almost sick to my stomach. It should be bright red in color.

Edit: I'm all for the drain plug, however an inexperienced person can really ***** a trans if they don't drill and tap the hole perfectly dead-on straight. It is because of that, that I'm suggesting to him to remove the bolt. I think there'll be less room for error in this particular case. It's a gut feeling call on my part.

yeah well when i took out the fill plug this morning (the car was on level ground it wasnt even jacked up when i took the plug out) almost 1/2 a quart just started spilling out... and it had brass shavings in it. i was pretty confused by that. i will take bolt out and try to get as much fluid out as possible. i think the next time my buddies lift doesnt have a car on it i think i will go over there and maybe do this drain plug install.
