Or since it looks like a U shaped coat hanger, can you use a U shaped coat hangar, or does it have some specialized ends??//tips??

I've had success removing the radio with a piece of coat hanger. HOWEVER, it can be a real pain in the **** without the tool.

Like he said. You can use wire or something but the tool makes it wayyy easier and you should be able to find it pretty cheap

The tool actually works well and yes, it is just a matter of pushing it in to release the radio from the carrier. You can get it at Walmart; and it is not much more than a coat-hanger.

You guys rock, as the kids say these days!!. Turns out Babe's sound system, although JBL, which I like very much, has seen better days. Cd's sometimes come out sometimes don't, amplification isn't balances and tone doesn't work ast all like it should , very little if any bass and fading is all screwy. It's time to upgrade, I really like having a good sound system. I've got an older Nakamichi deck with a 200 watt amp and 6 speakers combination of JBL and high end Yamaha in my daily driver Toyo.
. Depending on how involved it all gets, I'll probably do this stuff myself when it isn't so cold. We're still having overnights below freezing and day highs around 30+, So another couple weeks yet for Minnesnowta...

I know there was a thread not too long ago on updating with a more "modern" deck with DVD player etc, if you are interested in doing that.

If you're going to replace the stereo and you go with single DIN size, you may want to look for a cup holder or storage pocket with door that came with other Taurus' to have something more functional in the other DIN slot.

you could do something sensible and put in a double din video player so that you have something to do while you wait on the side of the road in your dead SHO for the tow truck...

My 93 had problems like you are experiencing, but mine had one side of the car with no output at all. I decided to get another original radio from a forum member and have not regretted it. I like that little feature where you control the radio from the upper dash area near the steering wheel.
I changed it over to a "modern" Panasonic system with Infinity speakers in my 90, and I am not entirely happy with the outcome. At night, the display is blue and has red accents, and I have never really gotten used to it. The sound is great, but I was happy with the original unit when it was working correctly, and I have already gone throught one faceplate on the Panasonic.
It would be nice if the original stuff could be refurbished to new condition, and it shouldn't be difficult with the new technology.
The original stereo and CD unit has a look that is sort of a no-nonsense military look that matches the car perfectly.

I went on Crutchfield today and ordered a nice Kenwood deck with 4 infinity speakers for the doors and back deck. The advisors there assured me that there was an accompanying harness and complete instructions coming with it all that would be an easy hook up and replacement of the old system. I guess the upper unit...the radio will just sit there and look bored and then the new unit goes underneath and then the speakers. The amp in the trunk gets bypassed, but I'm sure that 22 year old technology is nowhere near as efficient as what Kenwood is making these days, and if I can't get it loud enough from just what the Kenwood puts out, and still be clear, I'll get another amp and use the preamp outputs on the kenwood to drive some more watts through the speakers. I like loud music...still. I send through some pics when it is all installed
