Is it normal for the 'MAX AC' to go to 60^?

It seems odd to me that if I have my Vent or Auto set to say 72, when I hit Max it goes to 60. I re-read the owner's manual and it never says anything about it. It makes no sense to me. I have owned a few cars with electronic climate control and I have never experienced this. My Maxima isn't like this. Is this normal for the SHO?

That's how it works on the Gen I & II. Seem to think the Gen III you have to set the temp even when hitting max a/c.

It's normal and even the Gen III does it, I think, I'll have to check next time I drive it, I don't remember... shrug

MAX AC means you want it cool NOW! So they jump it to 60 and the system recirculates the interior air. Once you hit MAX AC you can raise the temp back up and still keep recirculating the interior air. That's what you do if you are going down a dusty road or get behind a stinky semi or something.

The manual also say that the compressor won't cycle if the outside temp. is less than 50F when you use the Panel/floor & Defrost/floor buttons.
Is this true?

Not that I know of. The compressor is used for the defroster to take the humidity out of the air. I know mine came on last night around 3:30 when I got back into my car. It was about 45 I'd guess last night.

My Lincoln Navigator (For Sale) also goes to 60 when MAX A/C is selected. This is consistent with earlier posts about wanting it cooled off as fast as possible.

As far as cold weather cycling of the compressor, it will run. There is no temperature sensor that precludes its operations in cold environs. That being said, the thermodynamic properties of the refrigerant may not permit adequate internal pressure in the system to permit compressor engagement.

Right, I understand the concept. But I still don't agree. If I have my temperature set to 72^ (because that's what I like), and it is say 90^ outside, by me (or in this case the car) setting the temp. to 60 (vs. 72), it isn't going to get to 72 any quicker. I think it should stay at my preset 72 when I hit MAX but simply run the fan on high and recirculate the air until it reaches 72. I still don't get the 60^ thing. Oh well, the main point was to make sure it wasn't just me. Thanks guys.

Where do you see that in the manual? I don't see that.

ptatohed,

It would seem that the manufacturer of the Maxima has not yet copied the Ford system. Give them time!
