Well, Ive been searching for a good lead on something to give my factory stereo a bit more bottom end wink I am looking for quality, not head pounding, window rattling bass...

That being said, is anyone familiar with Clarion's amplified sub? Comments? Or any other ideas/products to consider?

It would probably sound ok, but I hardly consider anything less than 10" diameter to be a subwoofer. How does it compare to a BassLink, if a self-enclosed unit is what you seek?

Yes, Ive considered the Bass-link... and right now Im undecided between the two. They are about the same price. The Bass-link is much larger... and Im trying to be very space/weight conservative.

I am actually very pleased with my stereo right now. I could stand for a bit more bass, but all I am really trying to do is take some of the strain off the other speakers by adding a sub (or mid-sub).

The Clarion should be fine. It's a very respected company. Have you looked at Bazooka? They've been around forever.

Listen to the old (circa 98) PPI flat 8" sub and then see if you still think anything less than 10" is not a sub. Those things were so tight and punchy they'd give a nose bleed and they were loud enough to rattle windows.

Now Bill, we have to stick with what's cost-effective and new here. I've heard some punchy 8"s and even 6"s but they just can't hit those low notes. I'd like to see one of those PPIs if you have a link to a pic, though.

When my parents bought their "Exploader" new in '93 they wanted a bit more bass They had the PREMIUM system, but wanted a but more... I managed to find some no-name self amplified, tuned "box" sub like the clarion for like $50 from Kragen (or Autozone... cant remember) I figured it was just a piece of garbage, but for $50 I was willing to try it out. I kept the reciept... so I could take it back if need be...

That thing had pushed THE BEST bass notes (for it's size) I have ever experienced! and 10 years later it is still punchy! A little distorted :p , but still packs a punch :D

And youd never guess the size of the "sub" in that box.... 4.5 inches! oh_my It is the smallest speaker in the entire sound system! thumbs_u

Ever since Ive been looking for something similar

And I think that clarion is it...

But okay... back to business...

What about THIS sub  :

hummm have you ever herd real BOSE speakers?! i have 2 301 series IV and 2 201 Series IV on my computer surround sound and nothing hits like the 8" woofers in the 301's. of course they don't break glass but who wants to listen to crap that loud?! my system is so filled with bass its like being at a rock concert, you can feel the bass in your chest. so yes 8" and 6" woofers can do the job when designed right.

Clarion head units and processors are where it's at. However, their amps and speakers leave MUCH to be desired. But most peoples ears aren't as critical as mine. Listen to it, then judge. boink
