So trying to be crafty, I took the IA "key" fob from my wife's Explorer and used it in the programming sequence in my new SHO, thinking I could carry only one fob to operate 2 vehicles...

Wrong!

So the programming went as expected in the SHO, and the 3rd key programmed to the SHO successfully. However now the original Explorer IA fob no longer works for the Explorer. Is there a way to undo the programming? To reprogram it to the Explorer I need 2 working IA fobs, which I no longer have.

Did I just get myself into a $300 bill at the dealer service department for the Explorer? Will it need to be reprogrammed with a dealer only scan-tool?

Many aftermarket (remote start/alarm) key fobs can allow you to program 2 vehicles to one remote, but OEM key fobs generally do not have this capability, unfortunately.

I guess I just assumed the new fobs acted like the old fobs and PATS keys where the vehicle learned the key/fob...like what I did with my 04 Ranger and 06 Explorer...kept one fob on my keychain, and had a PATS key blank cut half and half and had both vehicles learn the key.

I'm not sure what the mechanism would be that would cause the 3rd key to no longer work with the Explorer. Since you currently have 3 keys programmed to the SHO I suppose you could try to reprogram the SHO but with only the two original keys, then see if the Explorer key again works for the Explorer.

If that doesn't work, try finding someone in your area with an Autel DS708 or newer and buy them a 12-pack of their favorite beverage to reprogram your Explorer. You could also resort to a locksmith which would likely be less expensive than a dealership.

Dealer service writer says the labor would be $89 but I'd have to buy a new key fob because he claims its a one shot deal with them. Once they link to a vehicle they wont link to a different vehicle, but I am pretty sure I have already disproved that.
