install tips on a mech. oil pressure guage?

I got one from Walmart. Rick informed me it goes where the oil pressure send unit is. What all do I need to know and to do for this? How much oil will leak out during install?
Any info. will be greatly appreciated! thumbs_u

If you want to keep the OEM waring light you will neeed a 1/4" pipe tee and a short 1/4" pipe ******. You will also need some small plastic or copper tubing and fittings to bring the oil up to the gauge. You will lose about a 1/2 pint of oil if that.

gee, after searching around this topic, I'm not so sure this is a good idea. Has anyone had the hose break on them? Sounds like it is fairly common, and very messy...
What is the best routing method for the hose?
Is it worth the trouble to connect the light?
Where is the best place to mount the guage itself?

I didn`t bother with the T,i just cut out the idiot light.If i can see the psi directly,i don`t care if i have the light or not.The tubing won`t break or leak if you instal it carefully.You just have to be sure the tube doesn`t rub or chafe on anything.I have my n2o lines wrapped in rubber tubing at every point it is tied down,which may be a good idea for your guage also.The mechanical guages are actually prefered,as they are a bit more accurate than the electric ones.

Jeremy's right. Besides, by the time the light comes on, it's too late.

I went through 3 different electrical senders in my car and got 3 different readings from each of them. That is when I switched to mechanical. I've had that in there fro 2 months now with no problems. It's running through a grommet in the firewall and up the A pillar. If I were you I would get in on the gen I A pillar group buy and just stick the gauge in there. Good luck!

I ran my tube right through with the speedo cable just put a stiff wire though the hole and then taped the tube on the end of it and pulled the wire back through. Then cut a few inches off the tube incase it got kinked or anything.

Does it matter if the car is driven (in diagnosing the oil pressure from the guage)? I don't really feel like fooling with trying to mount it, so could I just hook it up, start the car, let it warm up, and rev it in order to see if the oil pressure is ok, then unhook it... until I figure out where and how to mount it?

P.S. Anybody have any pics of a single mounted guage inside the car?

Couldn't hurt I don't think. Thats what I would do if I just wanted to get the pressure checked.

I guess I could snap a pic of mine mounted in my truck. Really, the thing isn't going to spring a leak on you. Those hoses are tough. No need to mount it if you're just trying to read you cold and hot oil pressure. All the fittings you need should come with the gauge, just let the hose dangle loose under the car and leave the driver's door open if you just want to take some readings. Read it cold idle and 3000 rpms, then run at fast idle for 10 minutes or so (put you foot on the gas, read a book or something) then when everything's good and hot read idle and 3000 rpms again. Then disconnet the fitting and put the stock oil pressure sender back. Use a little teflon pipe compound on the threads ($.99 from any hardware store in plumbing section) to make a leak proof seal.

I didn't like the one from Walmart. The increments were so close together, I figured I would have a hard time reading it. I went to Autozone and got the Sunpro for $15. I got the sender bolt out of the block, but I can't tell if the bolt in the kit is the right size. I can get it started into the engine block, but I am afraid it might be too big and damage the threads in the block (if I force it in). I called Autozone and they don't know :rolleyes:
Will it be ok?
If so, and I can proceed, do I use the original fitting that the sending unit is hooked to, at all. (I am not worried with the idiot light at this point)

I put one in my 91 mazda b2600 4x4 because the bearings are worn and I was getting low oil pressure lights. Until I replace the bearings the only thing that works to keep the oil pressure in a good range is redline 20W50 :( and the truck burns 1 qt every 150 miles :( :(

What I meant with not mounting the gauge was if you just wanted to establish your numbers ie. car not leaving the driveway, you get your numbers then remove it and put the stock sender back. Yeah, the increments of the walmart gauge suck, but they're good enough for establishing the oil pressure readings. Even more useful if you keep in mind that 1 bar = 14.5 psi. For $7 the walmart gauge makes a damn cheap diagnostic tool.

You can always take the sender and the fittings in the kit with you to a hardware store and make sure they screw into the same size nut. There are only a few sizes that the auto makers use for oil pressure senders, so likely your mounting kit has the right size. Look at the threads and try to match up the diameters. If they look the same then they probably are the same. Oh, and because the block is cast iron and the gauge oil supply fitting is likely brass, if any threads get damaged by screwing in the wrong sized part it will be the brass fitting. They sell those at the hardware store too, so replacements can be had cheap.

Hey, the ticking/clacking never was this frequent, as it is now. I switched from 20w50 to 10w30 (Castrol, of course) a few mos. ago... could this be why???????

I have to ask out of sheer curiosity why you were ever running a 20 weight oil in your SHO. That is well out of range from the recomended 5w 30.

Mount that gauge, even if under the hood to check periodically. Once you've done all the work to get it in you may as well keep it.

well, I only used 20w50 for about 8,000 miles (I've only had it a year) I guess I used it because I have heard that it will slow down oil leaks.
Don't worry, I have repented of my ways... I have seen the light of 10w30 :D

Now... I have to get everything back together tonight. I went back to Autozone to get the metric fittings. Although the T does not include a fitting for the sending unit... so I can not install it (to keep the idiot light off).
How and where do I route the tubing through the firewall (I do want to install the guage). Please tell me in idiot terms please :)
