About 3 months ago I switched from the cone filter to the porterized intake. I removed the sax. and all that crap in there and did the modifiacation. I mainly did it because I wanted to get colder air to my car intake. I kept the mod for about a month and really began to miss the sound of the cone.
So about a month and a half ago I went back to the cone.
Concern:
I wasn't sure if my cold air would be as good as it was previously since I had taken out the sax. and air intake that runs through the fender wall and that was running directly to the cone.
Possibe Solutions:
I talked to Buford T. Justice on the phone and he filled me in on the Paul Nimz intake of putting the cone in the fender wall. TOO much for me to handle. I decided there was no way to do that with my limited skills.
Solution:
I decided to go back to the cone and that I was going to put a larger intake in my car and see if I could more or less funnel the cold air in. I knew I wasn't getting much cold air with the stock intake because my cone was consistantly very warm in the summer (I am sure the summer heat obviously had some affect) and because of the limited size of the intake itself. This is why is went porterized. I was also concerned with the amount of cold air I would get into the engine without any intake tubing at all.
Modification:
Since I had a couple of 45 degree street elbows, I was able to start the air funnel from the inside of the engine and work my way to the front. I tweeked The two elbows so they ran almost straight down into the fender after exiting the fender hole. I then took a 3 inch diameter 90 degree bend pipe that opened up to 4 inches on the end. I manipulated (twisted) the pipes so they came together and the 4 inch opening was facing the front of the car where the air comes through the lower front end. I zip tied it securely to part of the fender and went for a spin.
Results:
At first I wasn't sure how to test if I was getting air or not. Then I saw a plastic bag in my garage and had an idea. I hooked the handle to part of my engine so It wouldn't fly around in there if air was comming through. I Stuffed it into the end of the elbow protruding into the engine through fender. I drove at speeds of 15, 40, and 60, each time the bag was blown out of the tube.
I of course can't tell if I am improving performance but I do believe the air is cooler since I did the mod because the touch/feel of my cone is noticalbly cooler on the side were the air intake hits the cone, versus the side opposite the cool air.
Thought I'd post this, it was interesting to me and I am happy with it.
Sorry it was so long
