I feel sorry for your SHO. You must be abusing it quite hard to break that part. It's only a matter of time before the next weakest link gives up. Don't look for sympathy here. Remember, this car was designed as a sporty family sedan, not a drag racer.

okay first of all..i got my moneys worth out of this car already...i payed 900 bucks for it and it runs and drives perfect, i drive hard from time to time...and if cars like this werent meant to be beaten on they wouldnt call them SHOs, and they wouldnt be able to go full throttle, if its there im gonna use it...if i wanted to drive slowly i would have gotten a honda civic or accord, or kia....i love my sho, but its not my show car, its not my only means of transportation either, its my fast little daily driver, i love it to death and i love driving it hard..its just how i am...maybe it will wear off as i get older...im only 19 :p

Driving it for all it is worth and abusing it are two different things. The difference is that the engine and drivetrain were designed for full throttle use. They weren't designed for drop clutch starts and shifts. Something's got to give and I'm sure you will find out the hard (and expensive) way just what it will be. Growing up can be a lesson without being expensive. Please drive safely and live to tell the stories.

Im 16 and my 92 is my first car. Im fairly gentle with it most of the time. Last time i got on the gas i tore a motor mount. Drive hard if you can afford to take care of it but dont abuse it.

Yep. I can sorta remember when I was 19, and some of the stupid stuff I did. Hope you're as lucky as I was,,I'm still alive many years later!!! Hey, have some fun driving it, just don't hurt anybody.

Heh....you want impressive???

One quick 2-3 shift and I took out 4 teeth on 3rd gear itself and COMPLETELY stripped the input shaft gear clean. I wasn't powershifting or anything, just a quick shift and back on the gas. And I have a few mods, but I only have modest HP/TQ gains over stock. As far as I'm concerned this shouldn't have happened, but oh well. IMO the SHO's driveline is just too weak for the rest of the car. You don't have to be "abusing" these cars for them to break (right Denny?) but abuse will speed the process :D

That's why I'm getting a new car, one that can stand up to the occasional spirited driving session thumbs_u

No kidding! The first break down I had I was just shifting into third gear somewhere around 5K when I snapped one of the shifter cables. A month later I'd be running a rod shifter(which at one point I thought maybe that had snapped yesterday, but no, I was still able to shift) but yeah, I pop an axle just sitting? Maybe it was on its way out. I had noticed some wobbling lately. In fact...hmmmmmm

But wow, a pic of the MTX! I haven't seen one before! OUCH! And no kidding, Chris was just doing a quick shift that day when it went KABLAM rattle rattle rattle.
Modified ****** tranny. . .what was Ford thinking?!?

It's rumored that the F2xxxx (post 92 MTX-IV) may be a little better in terms of quality of internal parts. Several parts changed inside to F2xxx numbers (as well as the case halves).

All the broken 3rd gears I have heard of have been on E9xxxx trannies (89-91 base). Something to think about anyway.

I run my quaife in the MTX in the SR71 in a F2xxxx tranny (originally from my 92). Few broken axles but so far so good on the tranny, pile of timeslips a mile high here, loads of 13 sec runs and quite a few in the 12.9 range to, 3rd's still holding...

I have been told by a very reliable source that Ford has now discontinued third gear for our MTX SHO's, so we all might want to go easy on third gear.

:(

Later,
Mike
