I think I'm screwed.

If you think you have a spun bearing, pull one plug wire at a time and see if it goes away when you run it. If it goes away, (if it is indeed spun), that is the one you spun.

While this makes sense in theory (maybe you've done it, I don't know), the rod is still being rotated through the engine and any play from a spun bearing is still going to be there. If it's bad enough, I would imagine that it would still make noise. It might not be as audible though.

Interesting idea though! :)

It works.

This idea came from Pat, which initially came from Josh. The load of spinning isn't anything compared to combustion on the top of the piston. If it were the same, we would need combustion ;)

We found Pat's spun bearing this way.

You could also drain your oil and look for copper. If you've spun a bearing, you won't miss the shavings at the bottom of the drain pan.

Cool! Hopefully I'll never need to remember this! :)

Well, Today I pulled each plugwire from the coilpack and started the car. The noise was still there wich would lead me to beleive that the rod bearings are fine (I'm still replacing them). Of course, When I pulled one of the plug wires and started the car a new tapping/ticking showed up and was very audible. This happend when I pulled the cylinder number 2 wire. When I plugged it back in it disapeared. I'm hoping that was just somthing rattling around in there from the rough idle created by running the car on 5 cylinders.

I'm still replacing the rod bearings of course. As sean stated it could be an exhaust leak. However, One thing that should be noted is that I had to let the car warm up before the ticking occured. If the car is sitting overnight, Like it was it needs a good 30 seconds to a minute for the idle to settle down from 1,000RPM to about 750-800. When it does settle down thats when the ticking is most audible.

We'll see what happens.

your cam tensioner's shot. It's a simple fix, and yes, it'll last until you get your rod bearings done. I had one crapped out on me for about 4 months before I finally fixed it.

Also...take a gander at your crank pulley and see if it's wobbling. If it's not, it still won't hurt to pull off the crank bolt and see if you're suffering from a bad case of crank cancer.

you should bring it by...seriously.... we have everything to help you out. We can definitely locate it, take it apart, and fix it for you.... in a short time depending on what it is as well. There are local hotels and if it is a weekend fix and you're not in rush, we can do a weekend thing and take care of it. I don't want to diagnose without actually hearing it, but maybe you might want to shoot me a pm or give us a call? okay? :)

I know it's a few days late, but if you have a catted y-pipe you need to check the heat shields. If a weld breaks, there will be high pitched tapping.
