I'm sorry, but with $220 you still wouldn't have enough for the cheapest. The cheapest stock replacement is likely to be from AutoZone and comes with a lifetime warranty [NU0122RK], it's like $267 plus tax.

If you're on a really tight budget see if you can just find a stock clutch disk somewhere. It may be difficult to find the disk separate from a kit with a Pressure Plate (which is what makes the kit expensive). It's generally not a great idea to change just the disk without changing the PP, but if the PP and TOB are in decent shape (no problems with clutch activation or shifting previously, no wear on the PP fingers), you can get by with just a disk change.

Be aware, though, that it is very common on these cars for the TOB and PP to wear out the fingers on the PP. This usually also means that the quill sleeve that the TOB rides on needs to be replaced as well as the TOB.

So, if you're really lucky you may be able to get by with just changing the disk, but when you get in there it may be evident that you'll need to replace everything, anyway. The best bet, if you can swing it, is to get a stock replacement kit that includes the PP, TOB, and disk. As mentioned, they're usually much less than $300 from the common parts suppliers.

What would a "clutch kit" consist of? What are all the parts that I need to order if I want to change the cluthch, main bearings, rod bearings?

Please help me list all the parts, including ever gasket, seal, etc. so I can order them all, then I'll ask around for the cheapest labor in So Cal once I have the parts ready.

Thanks,

the clutch kit consists of disc, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. some kits even include a quill sleeve (slides over the input shaft sleeve to protect against wearing the aluminum quill away).

the clutch components can be purchased seperately. disc, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.

Umm...Autozone carries a clutch disc and pressure plate as seperate units, $60 or so for the disc and $75 or so for the pressure plate. I bought these within the last mont so preices are current. TO bearing, $15 for the cheapy...$30 for the better of the two.

Lifetime replacements :thumb:

Damn Mike you beat out whatever I was gonna say. Last year when I was looking at a '91 w/bad clutch I found one out of some place down south for an AWESOME price for the kit. Try a search under my name for all my posts. Should be around last spring/summer. I ended up not getting the car because I just didn't have the time to do the clutch(new job). BTW it is still where it was... Guy got a little indignant when I told him, too.... Dan saw it last week. Dunno if the guy ante'd up and did a clutch or not...

I'm not sure how to say this politely, but if you can't afford a clutch you need to ask yourself if you can really afford the car...

And don't forget all the stuff you have to include when doing the clutch.

You SHOULD put on new axle (hub) nuts. About $3 apiece.
-Maybe new seals for where the axles come out of the tranny.
-Subframe bolts?

If you're doing the main and rod bearings, look for an oil pan seal, other stuff.

When my clutch went the disc's springs got messed up, probably AFTER the TOB toasted. The PP then got torn up pretty bad...

That's really not a good idea.

Expect the unexpected. You'll break exhaust manifold studs, probably and endlink or two, mangle a ball joint, rip at least one motor mount and a subframe bushing, etc., etc., etc.

All of the sudden, you need $800, $1000, or more just to make the thing roadworthy, never mind registration, insurance, gas, etc. There are enough $500 SHO's out there that won't need anything major right out of the gate that would be a better deal.
