last night my brakes starting grinding.... AGAIN! man was I ******!
So today i went to midas to go get them replaced.
first off, they said that they couldnt warrenty off the calipers because i painted them.... WTF??? then to make matters worse they said that they couldnt turn the rotors, so i have to get new rotors.

but, they did bring the price down from 390 to 250.
But still, the calipers, rotors, and pads are all less than 4 months old. The rotor being their upgraded one (Evergard??) and the Ravin ceramic pads.... which was a $300 upgrade by itself, well with labor...

but i dont get it... the last time i brought them in, i had the calipers painted also, and yet they warrentied them out....
and the tech said that from painting the calipers, that would cause it to stick.... since i am taking brakes in college, i know that, that was total BS....
and that he said when i took of the caliper when i did the tranny swap, i also void the warrenty.... so what is it, the paint or the removal...
i didnt ask him this, but, i painted my rear calipers, the ones that were done the first time, and have yet had a problem with them....

So, as it stands, i can either go through midas, just to get these finished off, with new calipers, pads, rotors..
or do it my way, and just buy new rotors, and pads, and do it myself... (which i can) but IF the caliper is sticking, which i HIGHLY dought it, then i will be stuck with those calipers....
He also said that the heat cracks, and that the reason for it grinding was because the caliper is sticking.... i replied, that i know why they have heat cracks. the rotors are under sized for the car, and the weight of the car...
he just stood there like...
then they tried asking if i wanted a hi performance rotor, and i said i allready had a set coming in... they shut up then...
Im starting to think that this is more than just the size of the rotor... cause i mean, cmon, im never on my brakes very hard. yes i do have the high spirited drives, but i know better not to hit my brakes at that speed. And yes i have had some heavy braking, but its not like i was riding my brakes...
I think it might be the combonation valve (proportioning valve). maybe the valve isnt working right... i have noticed that i have front end dive, but the back rotors are working... they do get hot.... so i dont know...

I know the 96' is the best thing to do... but having spent 1400 on my tranny swap, with other things also,i really dont have the cash for the upgrade...
What should i do? take it back to midas, then once my rotors come in, if they do, just slap them on there? Or do it by myself, leaving the rotors on now, and going to A-Z and buying new rotors and pads?
Any suggestions will help! :thumb: :thumb:
And please no, You should do the 96 upgrade, because I KNOW!!!!!
thanks..

Oh yeah, if i do pay this to get done at midas that will bring my total, of what i have spent there, to alittle over $1300.... :cuss: :madflame: :cuss:  :banghd:
and to top it all off, i have a bad headache.... really bad..... so if ome of this dosent make sences...

If you are not tracking the car I bet you have a bad caliper, or othe problem. I have been getting 60,000 miles out of my front pads and rotors...without touching them. Granted I live in ND and I downshift more than use my brakes.

If you want a job done right...do it yourself. If you just did a tranny swap, you can do a brake job. I bet you can even do a complete brake job for less than 125 bucks.....

So, what i think im gonna do is, go to autozone, and pick up some of the Duralast rotors, and try to find some hawk pads. the hawk pads run around $60?
my friend told me that an auto zone here started to sell hawk pads. So i might try them. but if they dont, what should i get? remember these brake pads are going on my slotted brembos.... so should i get a semi metallic, or stick with the Hawk?
im hoping that my brembos get here within the week. that way i dont put too many miles on the pads. that is, if they get here.... what should i do?

Don't be angry with Midas, be angry with yourself that you can't maintain your own brakes. :bonk:

You say you're currently studying braking systems in college? What better way to get hands on experience then to repair your own brakes?

Just do it. You could have four new rotors and all new pads installed for probably around $100 in parts, and even if you did have a caliper problem (more likely a sliding pin issue), rebuilts are around $30/ea at AutoZone (with a lifetime warranty and they don't care what color they are). No matter what, doing them yourself if going to be cheaper than Midas.

P.S. You should also bleed the brakes to make sure you don't have a collapsed line.

the lines are brand new.... and the were bled...
Ok.... so how do i not maintain my brakes? im not following you on this????? well if midas would actually get people who know WTF they are doing, then i wouldnt have this problem. the first time i came back, they said my struts were shot, so they said that they couldnt warrenty them out unless i went and got the new struts to put in, i just had to pay for labor, at that time i also had them put in the evergard rotors, and ravin pads... their "upgrade"
then the next time, they said that they couldnt warrnety the brakes because they thought the lines were collapsed.... so i got new lines....
Now, i know i should have been more aware of what was going on, but i wasnt in school yet, so i was stuck in that situation...

any ways... all i need is the front rotors, and pads. thats it. not the rear, or anything else....
So, with that said,
can anyone else tell me what i asked, about the pads, and rotor situation? thank you.

You ask how you maintain your brakes. Here's your answer: You have a problem with your brakes. Hunt down the problem, and repair it yourself!! How did you manage a tranny swap if you can't do a brake job???

buy new pads and rotor(the cheap ones) make them last another 1000 miles until the good stuff comes through. when you get the new rotors buy the new pads and put them on with 0 miles, or get the lifetime hawk pads and replace them once the rotors come in. this sounds like alot of spending but with the money u spend on your stupid brakes you and a friend could of had a good time doing it and had some food at the end of the day. one q? did u put the grease behind the pad or make sure they did cause from my understanding that is a vital component to proper brake installation
