i added some refridgerant(sp) to my AC system the other day

I had the MAX AC running and i heard the compressor click on when i started adding the refridgerant. but the compressor doesnt stay on constantly, it keeps going on and then off causing the RPMs to surge and drop

its not so bad when the car is moving, but at idle the RPMs are bouncing as low as 500 (i thought the car was going to die but it doesnt).

Also, is the compressor supposed to come on when on 90 degrees on the automatic setting? the compressor shuts off when i move it to floor or anything but the automatic setting.

so anyway, what can i do for the compressor to remain constantly on? or is it supposed to be this way?

The compressor is supposed to turn on and off. The quicker it kicks on and off, the lower the pressure is in the system.

AKA, if it kicks on and off every few seconds...its needs more refridgerant...but keep in mind, it is supposed to cycle on and off. (roughly every 30 seconds or something is normal I think.)

Oh, I do believe certain settings on the climate control due cause certain things to happen. Like defrost and some other setting will cause the radiator fan to run no matter what, but vent will let it run only when it needs to.

The A/c Will Cycle Any Time The Settings Are On Defrost Or Mix Or On Colder Than The Interior Of The Car. The Reason For This Is That When The A/c Runs It Takes Moisture Out Of The Air. So It Improves The Effeciancy Of The Defroster. It Should Not Cycle When It Is On Floor Or Vent.

Ok, to clear this up a bit. The compressor will run to improve the quality of the air (no matter if it is hot air or cold air) if the climate control is set to anything BUT: Off, Vent, or Floor. So, if you don't have it on one of those three settings the compressor will run. It does periodically cycle, however it should not do it multiple times within a minute. Basically every 30 seconds or less is a bit excessive and can damage it. You need to add more refrigerant, but check the pressure. If you add to much you can do more damage and possible blow out a seal, the compressor, and this may possible hurt you physically in the process.
