Hello, my friend has a 1990 SHO 3.0L and would like to upgrade his hp as much as possible without a turbo. Due to the fact that turbos are as expensive as **** if you don't know how to install them. If you have any tips or ideas for HP upgrades without a turbo, please let me know.

Since the engine outputs 73hp per liter stock, not much can be done for large power gains without resorting to turbos, supercharging or NO2.

The things you can get without using forced induction are:
- Big Bore Butterflies (BBB)
- Headers, Y Pipe, Cat Back Exhaust
- Bigger MAF
- Port and Polished Intake and Runners
- Cams
And thats all I can think of for now. But those are some of the main components to upgrade an engine without using forced induction. Also, try the search button and youll learn a lot. Heres a link to a website that makes parts for SHOs:

See im trying to stay all N/A so it is hard to get a whole lot of hp out of these cars without a turbo but it can be done to a certain degree:

1.Y-pipe (the biggest notice/gain in hp) (equal length @ shobros)
2.Free flow cat-back system
3.A good cold air set up
4.80 mm maf w/ LPM
5.Stage II cams
6.Big Bore butterflies
7.Port & Polish Intake runners

But remember all of this will feel even better with a stage II clutch and a good tranny. I would also spend some time/money on the suspention get some good springs like Eibachs and Koni shocks, SFB, bigger front and rear sway bars, subframe connectors, H-brace, front and rear strut tower bars.
And you will need good brakes to stop it.

You can also do a 3.2 swap and you can bore it out to a 3.3 or ive even seen it bored to a 3.6 but thats more work and money

under drive pullies, bigger throttle body **** a few guys ported their exhaust ports. you could always go bigger valves. as for bolt ons there is a good number of upgrades but i think unless you get into de stroking and messing with bore and or compression sizes your gonna come up shorter then you like. 320 hp was the best ive seen n/a.

thats not counting the salt flat racer SHO which used a carb and made 500 + hp :) that car set a record in the salt flats

if you want more info on that car talk to ernie.

Big HP without a blower (N/A) is expensive on a SHO. Lots of mods as stated but it has a nice price tag.

Exemple , the sho cams goes for 600-700$ , while a cam in a 5.0 is like 150$.

Not sure what you're going to do with NO2, it won't add any power. N2O may be a better choice.

I'm suprised that everyone responded with what's already ABUNDANTLY found in a search.

I'm actually glad that there was a list of helpful answers here, so I didn't have to weed through 75 post of more technical post using the search feature.

I just bought a Gen 2... Picking it up in a few hours. It looks like I'm back in the SHO game. Thanks for all the helpful information guys. BTW, I'm going to be initiating the use of the Zex kit on my car.
