1. unplug mafs
2. remove mafs from engine
3. spray mafs cleaner into the small hole in the mafs, about 15 short bursts of the mafs cleaner.
4. allow to dry
5. reassemble.

and all this time i thought you were supposed to use a blowtorch, a toothbrush, and used motor oil.

they make special MAF sensor cleaner/spray. I got it at Pep Boys, its not cheap($7) but its worth not blowing out the MAF..

I heard scrubbing bubbles would scrub it clean. Then follow up with the blow torch method to get rid of any residue.

And you can't you a toothbrush unless you take the MAF out of the housing.

According to mythbusters you can just drop you MAF in a jar of Coca-Cola and let it sit overnight. Pull it out in the morning - dry it off with compressed air and it will be better than new.

mafs

So i took the mafs off and sprayed it liberally with the mafs cleaner. haha and what do you know when i try to tighten the hex bolts back on the mafs one bolt snaps off. so now i have one bolt on and one bolt with no head. I also took off the hose to the throttle body and sprayed throttle cleaner on the butterfly valve to clean that up. Next i will replace my fuel filter because my car still stutters when I give it a lot of gas. It definitely seems like there is a fuel issue or something wrong.

oboytroyman - please stop starting 8 different threads for each problem you encounter with your car. Also, spend a little more time describing the issue at hand. If your car is bucking and hesitating at high RPM, it might "feel like it's running out of fuel" but that is a poor description of the symptom. Saying that "the car loses power above 5500rpm at anything over 1/2 throttle" or "the engine bucks and jolts when it's floored over 5500 rpm" means a lot more.

Also (me taking pity on you), check your spark plug wells to see if they have oil in them, and check the condition of your spark plugs and wires. If your spark plugs / wires are severely worn out or there is oil in the plug wells, your car can buck and jolt and feel like it's missing fuel at higher RPMs. PLEASE search for how to do these things, they have been covered 100x on the forum.

Also, the problem I am having seems to vary a little bit. From a dead stop shifting between 2500 and 3000 rpms (normal driving) getting up to speed, say 55mph...the car will stutter sometimes, and sometimes it acts normally. So best description of this issue is my hesitation varies quite a bit..we'll see what changing the fuel filter does for me and I'll keep you guys posted. thanks for the info and help!!

So far I've cleaned the mafs and cleaned the butterfly valve on the throttle body. I bought a fuel filter but still have to put it on.. air filter is good too. and the problem still exists...might be actually a little worse haha

Also, Should i clean my iac? Sometimes when I start my car it will just try to start like it's not getting gas and i just take the key out, put it back in, wait for fuel pump and it starts after a few cranks. but normally my sho seems to start and idle perfectly, it's just every once in a great while now.

can i use throttle body or mafs cleaner to clean the iac?

hmm that's a good question. I should probably pull one out to look at the plugs and check for oil. do you know what size socket i need to pull them out? and how deep

You use a spark plug socket - forget the size - It's the smaller one of the three sizes I have - spark plug sockets are all deep well so don't worry about that. For the rear ones if you leave the intake on - you'll need an extension. Pull the plug wires off the plugs - look down in the holes for oil - if you see it collecting in the hole at the bottom then you need valve cover gaskets/plug well seals.

Look at everything. The plug tips, the porcelain, etc. If you don't know how old that stuff is and it doesn't look new then start there. It's hard to get to performance problems without knowing these are known to be in good order. Replace wires one at a time so you don't mix up the firing order.
