Howdy all,

i have a 95 MTX and having a little trouble..

when i have it low in the gear (like 30-35mph in 5th) and i put some gas on it i get some hesitation and if i keep on it, it starts (what i think) is a knock.

any ideas?

thats probably not too good on rod bearings that are already notoriously weak....I usually downshift when the tach drops below 2k, but we all have our own styles

Do you think that you may just need plugs and wires. When the motor is under a load like that, that is when you will first notice a weak spark plug wire. Or even a fouled/worn plug. Could you knock be more of a bucking.

You're lugging the engine. 30-35 in 5th is way too slow.

Try shifting at 7000 rpm... :)

yea i do that much to much as it is!

so is that the word? possible fouled plug?

could it be a fuel pump thing or maybe fuel filter thing?

just trying to get a feel, this is all a learning experince for me :)

If you lug the engine, the EEC adds gas to keep the engine from stalling, which equals a rich mixture which will foul the plugs.

Not saying that there's nothing else going on, but you definately want to wind it out a bit more.

cool, i can do that. just for future reference what would you all say the shift optimal (for fuel efficency) points would be?

My SWAG would be about 3500 rpm before the secondaries open and let a lot more air/fuel into the engine.

Try to keep it above 2000 rpms except at idle with no load, and of course putzing around in first gear. If you happen to be one gear too tall and you're below 2000, go really light on the throttle until you get above 2k.

The world won't end if you don't drive it like that, but if you want to avoid unnecessary abuse then you won't go wrong following the above advice.

That's prolly about right. You should be able to hit the gas and accelerate cleanly. For "normal" driving, that's about 2.5-3k.

Lugging the engine, any engine, is a bad thing.
