Did you get a good thermostat with a giggle valve ? Did you burp the system after you where done ? Did yo install the thermostat the right way ? How do u know the water pump is good , have you relplaced it , make sure it's not leaking at the weep hole . Also check waterpump pulley and belt .

I wouldn't run a lower thermostat if it was me . Find out why it overheats don't try and bandaide a bigger problem with a ghetto fix .

Yes it has giggle valve,I did remove rad. cap and let idle to remove air,it is installed correctly,I can see the antifreeze circulating in the radiator and am not leaking any anti freeze and my belts are good. I am lost on this one and never had a problem on a car like thisThis is the second t-stat I purchased for this car and still have problems, thats why i was curious bout the 160 t-stat from a 93 3.0 taurus.I just purchased this car 2 days ago now I see why it was for sale

Flush the system and burp again . You are getting the engine warm to burp itright ? Getting the thermostat to open . Not just letting it idle. When I did mine it wouldnot gethot enough to open the t stat just idleing .

first off, define "overheating"... where is the needle on your temp gauge?
second check heater hoses for any crimps that may have happend.
third check your radiator/condenser for grime/bug build up.

It will go all the way up in idle to the N unless the heater is on.I dont want to blow my head gasket. The hoses are good and radiator /condensor is clean. The fan does not turn on until temp hits the N.Is there supposed to be 2 different fan speed sensors 1 that that turns on at normal op temps and then a faster or longer running one for when she gets hot and when it does kick in it's for 15seconds to drop it to the O

my temp guage was going to the N yesterday.
I found a hard line between the firewall (maybe heater line, it has a sensor on it)?
that was hissing. I cut off the fittings on the hard line and replaced the fittings with hose ends. now it runs normal temps, (below the N).

Gen 1 SHOs like your 91 have a single speed fan, later Gen 2s had 2 speeds.
Every SHO ive owned sits in the R-L area, going up to the N seems a little high to me but it could be a sensor issue.
The small single wire sensor in front of the t-stat housing is for the gauge.
sometimes it can get corroded, try cleaning it first.

Ive had two fail over the years,in my case they would never read above C.

the larger coolant sensor on the heater line near the firewall is for the ECU/fan.

I do have a 2nd gen. sho. I suppose my low speed is not working on my fan. What controls the fan speeds? Can I hook up cooling fan to a toggle switch w/o worrying bout problems.Out of curiousity has any tried running a 160d t-stat for performance?

my mistake,I though you had a gen 1.
sounds like your low speed might not be working,id test that.
the relay module controls fan operation, the black box above the fan.
It should have red and white sicker on the top with a large letter "M","Z" ext.
If you replace it,make sure you get one that has the same letter.
the rated temp on a t-stat is simply when it opens, not what temp your engine will run at.
On the gen 2 fan there are 2 hot wires, one for the high speed and one for the low speed.

Taurus SHO 92 MTX overheating

Hi there.
I have a similar problem with my 92 SHO in Brazil.
The car was good, but one month ago the temperature on the gauge up to N and I´m not able to solve it.
The radiator and water pump are new, 6 months of use. I changed the fan, the contol relay, the gauge, but it is on the same situation yet.
I changed the thermostatic valve and radiator cap, both motorcraft.
There are two sensors, I changed both, but I put used sensors and continue with overheating.
If I turn on the AC, the fan start and the temperature down.
I ordered two new sensors, but it´s necessary at least one month to arrived in Brazil.
Is it possible a problem on the rotor inside the water pump?
Does anybody know about a solution?
Thank you for the attention.
