I am having a difficult time replacing the power steering hoses on my 93ATX. After searching various posts it seems the best way to get to the power steering rack is to drop the rear of the sub-frame. If I understand what I have read it seems I need to:

1. Lift the car from the middle of the front part of the sub frame.
2. Place Jack stands under the front sub-frame bolts.
3. Move the floor jack to a position under the rear subframe.
4. Loosen the sub-frame bolts slowly, but do not remove them.
5. Slowly lower the rear of the sub-frame using the jack.
6. Lower sub-frame only enough (5-6 inches?) to get my hands on the
power steering rack.

Questions:
1. Do I need to support the engine in anyway?
2. Do I need to disconnect the rack from the subframe?
3. Should I disconnect the outer tie-rod from the steering knuckle?
4. Since I really only need access on the driver's side is it necessary to
drop both sides?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.... this simple repair has been a real PAIN!

you will need to support the subframe - the engine is held in that.

if you don't disconnect the rack from the subframe, and you lower the rear of the subframe 5", you will tear the steering column boot and pull the column apart.

I don't see a need to disconnect tie-rods.

you will need to either drop both left side fasteners or both rear fasteners on the subframe, since it will not twist enough to lower 5-6" with only one fastener loose.

Now,
I would support the car at the unibody behind the rear subframe mount points. If you want the rear of the subframe to come down 5", the rear bolts will need to be removed. You will also likely need to remove the y-pipe and at least the connectors to the o2 sensors. The front bolts will need to be loosened to allow the rear to drop. When you reassemble, you will need to align the subframe to the unibody or your steering/alignment will be screwed up.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. Hopefully I can get this done in the next several days.
