My sho lately makes a loud pinging and knocking sound comeing from the front of the engine. It starts and idles but it pings like crazy. There are no check engine lights, so I doubt I could pull codes. I looked at the plugs they appear to be ok. I have noticed in one cylinder,on the piston there are two ring marks on it. Someone has suggested that the wristpin from the piston has broke and the piston is now allowed to hit agaisnt the heads? Any opinions/suggestions on my situation?

There are many knowledgeable SHO people in your area; if you've got the time, let one of them look at your car. ****, I can look at it for ya, but I work quite a bit lately (55+ hours/week). Something like this, you really need someone to hear what the engine is doing frown

Really doubt it would be this, but..low octane gas and knock sensor not adjusting? shrug Always try the simplest things first. I might be able to come up there or help you out if you want sometime, I know many people around this area, that would be more than happy to help you.

How does the car drive? shrug

Just for yucks, take a stethescope to the water pump. I had a bad pump that "knocked" like all get-out, and sounded like something was rattling around in the engine.

I suspect that a broken wristpin with a free-riding piston would make one heck of alot of noise...

Good luck. I hope you have a water pump problem and not a wrist pin broke.

Thanks for the help! I will have to check the water pump out to see if that is the problem. I havent driven it becasue im afraid Ill do heavy damage if something is wrong with the engine. Also if a piston could hit the heads, would it hit the sparkplugs first or the valves?

Would hit the valves first. But check your codes first anyways, just because there's no CE light doesn't mean there's not stored codes...in fact over 80% of the codes won't make the CE light come on. You said the noise is coming from the front of the engine? Upper or lower? Possible bad rod bearing?
