Headlight harness and Sylvania SilverStar Intrest

I installed a suv harness with wetsanded and polished tanks. Running xtravisions right now. The lamp out light is on, I just covered it up with some electrical tape. The lamp out feature sucks about 2 amps away from your bulbs and a reason why they are brighter with the new harness.

I'm a little confused here. Why would we need a harness? I am currently using SilverStars in my 94 and having no problems. I don't get any dummy lights. Then again, I think some of my dummy lights are burned out. :laugh_ti:

I'm interested...unless we can set something up for some clear lenses and projectors from Depo... I'd rather have some projectors.

I know my silverstars would work alot better with new lenses. I used one of those polishing kits and it did help some. If I had time, I could have done a better job. Still would like new lenses all around.

i have hids so i have no need for a harness, but if you are able to run morepower to a regular halogen bulb in turn it will be brighter thats the purpose of the harness.

Is this for SilverStars, or SilverStar Ultra's?

The Ultra's are going for $45 to $50/pair retail, but some retailers (Checker is one...) are running a $10 rebate (maybe it was $20?) on SilverStar pairs until Jan 27, 2007. Edit, 1-21-2007: Stopped by Checker today, the rebate is $10 at the register on a pair of Ultra's, and an additional $10 mail-in rebate, so $50 down to $30. Regular old Silverstar pairs are $5 off at the register and $5 mail-in rebate, $38 down to $28. As always, YRMV...

9004 and 9007 SilverStar's can be had on Sylvania's Performance Shop site at $29.98 a pair +tax, free shipping via 2-day Fed-X. They don't have Ultra's on the site, but I can't see any mechanical difference between the SS and the SS Ultra's, IMO, it's a marketing gimmick.

Ummm no... Thats not even close to how the lamp out function works or even electricity for that matter...

Sorry about that. I was thinking too fast. The lamp out feature alone is worth about a .05 volt drop. The stock harness accounts for about another 1.5 - 2. I think you can agree that more VOLTS going to the bulbs produces a brighter light. I would reccommend this mod to anyone. You must also make sure that your headlight lens is clear to get the full effect. It was rather easy to do except for having large hands, makes reaching around in there a pain....

Quiet right, it's the cruddy 12 to 18 year old harnesses combined with cruddy 12 to 18 year old head light housings that **** the light output. Also if you want the Lamp out function to work simply cut the lamp out sensor wire from the old plug and splice it to the new one.

so what exactly is the benefit to this harness. is it just replaceing the old stock ones for a better set of halogen bulbs?

The harness will "basically" hardwire your headlights directly to the battery in effect bypassing the stock wiring that is already in your car. The relay will act as the on-off switch for the power to get from the battery to the lights. The relat is controlled by the stock headlamp switch, so instead of turning on the lights directly, you turn on the relay, which turns on the headlights.

Because the harness will allow you to draw power directly from the battery instead of drawing power thru the 12+ year old stock wiring in your car, this will allow more juice to flow to the light and not "get lost" along the way. More juice means mo-better light output from the bulb. The headlamp housing itself will still be a limitting factor since it is also 12+ years old and may be dirty, pitted, scratched, discolored, moldy, contaiminated, etc...

The part with the resistor in it. The Lamp out system measures current. To measure current you need to measure a voltage drop over a known resistance. So if you find the resistor (AKA the current shunt) and cut off the wires that go from the headlight switch and to the headlights and splice them into the power side of the new harness the lamp out system will work. You will need to attach the wires that use to go to the resistor for the switch to work and depending on where the resistor is located you may want to move it closer to the new harness and lengthen the wires that go to the lamp out module rather than running power wires back and forth across the car.
